Description:
Job Summary:

Performs chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests to provide data for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease. Applies techniques used in fields of microbiology, histo-pathology, hematology, diagnostic immunology, immunohematology, chemistry or morphological examinations. Assists with coordinating operations.

Essential Responsibilities:


  • Performs as a Medical Technologist.

  • Assists with coordinationg operations as appropriate in absence of or to assist supervisor. Trains and evaluates staff in specialty area. Assumes responsibility for special area functions.

  • Advises supervisor of potential problem areas. Develops workload statistical information for staffing purposes.

  • Monitors Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) programs. Compiles, records, and evaluates data and results.

  • Conducts monthly facility inspection. Emphasizes cleanliness, efficiency of operation, workflow, sanitation and good housekeeping methods. Acts as safety advisor.

  • Prepares and conducts preventive maintenance program. Ensures effective, economical and efficient use of equipment, instruments, spare parts, and supplies. Repairs and plans equipment storage as needed.

  • Obtains and/or receives specimens of patient body tissues, fluids, or excretions. Prepares specimens for micro and macro laboratory study and/or for quantitative and qualitative chemical analysis. Cultivates, isolates, and identifies pathogenic bacteria, parasites, and other micro-organisms. Groups or types blood. Cross-matches specimens. Performs hematological tests and transfusions. Measures glandular and other bodily activity. Carries procedures to completion. Records laboratory test results.

  • May serve as General Supervisor as defined by CLIA 88 for High Complexity Testing. Is accessible to testing personnel at all times testing is performed to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic support. Provides day to day technical oversight of personnel performing high complexity testing. Must be on-site to provide direct oversight when high complexity testing is performed by certain individuals. Monitors test analyses and specimen examination to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained. Fulfills certain responsibilities as delegated by the lab director or supervisor, including assuring that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratorys established performance specifications; ensuring that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning; providing orientation to all testing personnel; and annually evaluates and documents the technical performance of all testing personnel.

  • Gathers, analyzes, compiles, and records data and information for routine, special, and statistical reports and studies.

  • Assists in preparation of budget.

  • Prepares, updates and recommends fee schedules for lab work performed in area of expertise.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience


  • Minimum three (3) years of general laboratory experience.

  • Supervisory/lead or project management experience.

Education

  • Bachelors degree in medical technology or related field.
License, Certification, Registration
  • Medical Technologist License (Hawaii)
Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in adaptability, decision making, customer service, influence/leadership, interpersonal relations, oral communication, problem solving, project management, quality management, teamwork and written communication.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research writing experience.
  • Pathology experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in word processing, spreadsheet and database PC applications.
  • Post high school coursework in chemistry, biology and business management.
