Description:
Job Summary:

Under the direct supervision** of a Pathologist, and in accordance with established policies and procedures, performs preparation and gross examination of surgical pathology specimens, preparation and staining of fine needle aspiration, bone marrow smears, and frozen sections.

**Direct supervision of a Pathologist requires that the Pathologist must be on site, in the vicinity of the clinical laboratory where pathology is performed and available for consultation and direction during the processing of specimens that involve dissection. For tissue processing that does not involve dissection, a qualified pathologist may be available by telephone or other electronic means.

Essential Responsibilities:


  • Upholds Kaiser Permanentes Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws.

  • The Pathologist Tissue Technician is expected to be able to perform the following duties:  

  • Autopsy Duties: Autopsy - prepare body, set up for autopsy and clean after autopsy. Autopsy - dictate gross description and cassette summary.

  • Autopsy - dictate clinical summary.

  • Autopsy - dissection and displaying of organs for pathologist, taking sections of tissue and submitting for processing.  

  • Surgical Pathology Duties:

  • Dissect large and complex specimens.

  • Gross examination and description including performance of grossing/dissection; examines tissue as to type, size/measurement, color, status of tissue such as open, unopen, in fresh state or in other fixatives, dissects and/or take sections for microscopic exam as defined by grossing protocol, and if necessary, order stains per protocol. Such action must be documented as by dictation as elements of the gross examination. Submit specimens into cassette.

  • Intraoperative Consultation Duties:

  • Prepare tissue for intraoperative consult including sectioning of tissue for Frozen Sections as instructed by the Pathologist.

  • Prepare frozen sections slides of tissue including staining, cover-slipping, and submission to the Pathologist.

  • Prepare Touch Prep slides including staining, cover-slipping, and submission to the Pathologist.

  • Bone Marrows, Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA), and Other Studies:

  • Assist Pathologist and Clinician in performance of bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, FNA and other study (if necessary). Also stain, cover-slip and submit to Pathologist any bone marrow aspirate smears or FNA smears.

  • Other Duties:

  • Process Pathology samples: accessions pathology and cytology specimens, ensures patient identification and verifies orders against requisitions and specimen containers and resolves discrepancies; lining up specimen, accessioning, engraving cassettes, put sections in cassette given by Pathologist Asst or Pathologist, verify tissue in cassettes before closing; logging of all cassettes and submitting in fixatives for histology.

  • Tracking Specimens and preparing specimens for transportation.

  • Maintenance in Morgue and Cutting Room: cleaning, change solutions, dispose tissue, chemical waste handling etc.

  • Manages overdue reports. Files tissue slides and cards. Troubleshoots CoPath computer and dictation equipment. Releases slides and reports per policies and procedures. Communicates with patients, clinicians and hospital staff. Prepares data and reports e.g. quality assurance activities. Takes notes and minutes for the Department. Transports tissues to the Pathology Department from external Departments. Maintains Department supply inventories. Performs other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:

Experience


  • In addition, the individual must have laboratory training including either:

  • completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLA, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR

  • at least 3 months documented laboratory training***** in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.

  • ***** The Chief of Pathology may proctor a candidate who meets the education requirement but does not have the documented laboratory training for 3 months. The proctoring will include grossing lab techniques and will provide the required documentation.


Education


  • Individual must be qualified as high complexity testing personnel under CLIA regulations.

  • Education/training as described below that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited*** institution. This education must include:

  • 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR

  • 24 semester hours of science courses that includes

  • 6 semester hours of chemistry,

  • 6 semester hours of biology, and

  • 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.

  • ***Accredited college or university means an educational facility which has met the standards of the United States of America Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities or the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges; or, if a non-United States college or university, one that is evaluated and found equivalent by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Certification as Histotechnician or Histotechnologist.

  • Medical/ pathology terminology and basic computer knowledge.

  • An earned associate degree in a laboratory science**** or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited** institution

  • ****An associate degree in a laboratory science; is interpreted to mean an associate degree in a chemical or biological science.

  • 24 semester hours of MLT courses;  

  • 24 semester hours of science, incl. 6 in chem/bio and 12 in chem/bio/med lab tech.

  • This is an on call position, days and hours may vary.
