Under general direction, the Manager, Medical Center Risk Management and Patient Safety, develops, implements, evaluates and improves an integrated clinical risk management and patient safety program i associated with athe Service Area. Includes programs to achieve the proactive prevention, identification, elimination or reduction of the number and severity of clinical risks/losses.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Supports the development and management of an integrated Clinical Risk Management and Patient Safety strategy across the Service Area

  • Manages the development, utilization and assessment of uniform systems, processes/techniques/tools, as well as policies/procedures and interventions to assess,identify, prevent and/or reduce losses/risks.

  • Works with Director to ensure defined performance management/improvement targets/benchmarks and, regulatory/accreditation standards related to Risk Management and Patient Safety., are met.

  • Ensures that the management of claims events are timely and effective so as to minimize financial consequences/costs.

  • Works collaboratively with other Service Area disciplines/departments (e.g., Quality, Accreditation, Regulation & Licensing, Compliance, Member Services, Finance), Medical Staff and Regional departments (e.g., Risk Management, Claims/Legal, Environmental Health & Safety) to design and implement risk management and loss prevention strategies and programs, as well as performance improvement programs.

  • Manages the identification/measurement and assessment of risk and/or patient safety issues through data collection, aggregation, quantitative and qualitative analysis and reporting of trends and unusual occurrences by key area, severity, location/department and job

  • Assists in facilitating the Risk Management/Patient Safety Committee at the Service Area in partnership with Physician Director.

  • Assists in managing the risk management/patient safety education, training, and communications process/services.

  • Communicates significant event information/analyses.

  • Deliver risk management orientation courses/modules.

  • Develops and maintains effective relationships and communication with all levels of Service Area physicians and staff in order to facilitate problem identification and resolution.

  • Manages the recruitment, retention, performance and development of the Risk Management and Patient Safety Department staff.

  • Develops, monitors and controls department budget.

  • Patient Safety: Accountable to promote an organizational culture of safety and ensure appropriate patient safety standards and guidelines are implemented consistently in the delivery of health care to our patients, including but not limited to: TJC, National Quality Forum, and Leapfrog. Basic Qualifications:


  • Minimum one (1) year of management experience

  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in risk management in an acute care medical center including experience in planning, implementing and evaluating risk management programs.

  • Education

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in nursing, health services administration, public or business administration or public health required.

  • License, Certification, Registration

  • Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of governmental and regulatory standards/ requirements/guidelines related to risk management; medical malpractice, tort principles and proceedings.

  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of, and utilize the principles, practices and techniques of patient safety, and risk management, including risk identification, assessment, audit design, analysis, treatment and evaluation of risk management processes and systems (including Root Cause Analysis and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis); quantitative and qualitative statistical analysis; hospital and outpatient medical care delivery; quality management/improvement principles, methods and techniques.

  • Demonstrated ability to utilize effective oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to utilize consulting, project management and leadership skills such as coaching/mentoring, as well as interpersonal skills such as facilitation, negotiating, and influencing.

  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience as a supervisor preferred.

  • Master's degree in one of the aforementioned fields or a Juris Doctorate preferred.

  • Current and valid licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing preferred.

  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) preferred.
