Public Affairs Representative

Assists Public Affairs department in the execution of a planned Public Relations program. Provides internal communication services to Division or Service Area departments, teams and individuals to enable KP to meet strategic priorities. Works with a variety of personnel to achieve consensus, develop and implement communication plans, tailor messages for specific audiences and ensure consistency of messages inside and outside the organization. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with community, business groups and government agencies. Develops and promotes community relations programs which demonstrate the organization's commitment to its social mission. Works under the supervision of a manager.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the development and implementation of strategies for effective internal communications.

  • Plans, writes, produces and oversees the distribution of print and electronic communications such as newsletters, management communications, teleconference scripts, directories, on-line publications, etc.

  • Edits written documents prepared by others.

  • Assists during crisis in developing local Bulletins, sets up and maintains informational hotlines.

  • Participates in developing and executing project communication plans for Senior Staff, Division and/or Service Areas.

  • Researches and writes communication plans; executes all or portions of plans, including arranging teleconferences, site visits, making presentations, convening meetings and conducting training sessions.

  • Provides staff support for ad hoc working groups and internal departments developing communication strategies.

  • Coordinates communication programs Establish and maintain relationship between Medical Center/Service Area and elected officials in area.

  • Establish and maintain system for monitoring local legislation.

  • Assists in tracking issues, researches and documents Kaiser Permanente positions.

  • Coordinate various community relations projects.

  • Recommends school-related Community Service expenditures.

  • Organizes Medical Center drives.

  • Coordinates internal special events e.g., openings, groundbreakings, anniversaries.

  • Assists with external events, e.g., corporate sponsorships, walks, runs, fairs.

  • Assists with the development and implementation of a media plan.

  • Develops and maintains contacts with reports, editors.

  • Writes/places press releases.

  • Provides technical assistance with press conferences.

  • Responds to media inquiries.

  • Basic Qualifications:


  • Minimum three (3) years of related experience in corporate, agency or health care setting.

  • Education

  • Bachelor's degree in public relations, journalism, communications or related field OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.

  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

  • License, Certification, Registration

  • N/A.

  • Additional Requirements:

  • Requires knowledge and experience in journalism, public relations, media relations, special events, graphics, community relations.

  • Experience in public relations planning.

  • Excellent in a variety of word-processing and presentation software.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; interpersonal and team work skills.

  • Ability to maintain high productivity amidst competing priorities and tight deadlines.

  • Excellent organization skills.

  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
