Health Sciences Library - GRADUATE INTERN

Location: Clackamas, OR Job Number: 671504 Date posted: 02/12/2018
Description: This is a temporary internship position not to exceed 6 months. Graduate level internship work may include in-depth research projects and documentation; complex data analysis and graphs; writing and designing new collateral marketing materials; assisting with audits; developing and executing surveys for internal or external stakeholders; completing process improvement audits.

Essential Functions:
kpLibraries are organized nationally, with shared eBook and print book collections. Print books are shared and shipped between the library locations, but are collected at the local level. In order to provide an overview of the collection as a whole, the entire organization would benefit from a collection assessment.
Activities would include first undertaking research and study to gain or update knowledge of the various collection assessment methods and tools, including both qualitative and quantitative analysis, followed by implementation, to include evaluation of:
  • core works
  • collection strength
  • peer comparative analysis of monographs
  • monograph budget analysis
  • gap analysis
  • collection growth
  • collection currency and age
  • usage of collection
This project will also provide the summer intern with the opportunity to gain hands on experience with library systems, including LibAnswers, OCLC, DOCLINE and Sierra. These tools aid in the discovery of:
  • the total number of volumes

  • titles under specified subjects to measure collection density

  • titles added to a subject collection over a defined period of time to measure collecting intensity

  • total expenditures on acquisitions by subject

  • circulation frequencies by borrower groups and other collection use statistics

  • inter-library loan statistics, including requests to and from other libraries.

If time allows, the intern could implement user surveys for opinions about the scope, depth, significance, and currency of the collection. If time does not allow, current user feedback data could be analyzed.
Once the collection has been thoroughly assessed, and weaknesses, if any, are identified, the final step would be to calculate how much initial and sustained funding is required to develop and maintain a collection so that is meets the needs of the institution. This information would be gathered whether additional funding is likely or not.
