Operating Room Assistant

Assist the Registered Nurses (RN) on the surgical team, by performing a variety of tasks to ensure that the necessary pre-operative and post-operative activities are attended to.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Obtain necessary equipment, sterile supplies and positioning aids for scheduled cases according to preference cards.

  • Check case cart for completion prior to cases. All instruments pulled, all supplies pulled/ and in orderly fashion (open items vs. hold items), and positioning equipment in ready position for the case.

  • Communicate with Sterile Processing and the circulating nurse regarding selection and transport of equipment, positioning devices, supplies, and instruments.

  • Understand the function and set-up of equipment and assemble.

  • Assist operating room staff in room turn overs, including anesthesia equipment, and monitor, changing circuits, and tubing, mopping the floor and making of surgical bed.

  • Communicate problems with equipment or supplies to the circulating nurse or lead nurse.

  • Transport operating room case carts outside of the assigned operating room, assuring each case cart is complete and ready for the case.

  • Decontaminate soiled equipment and instruments after procedures. Remove instruments processed in the operating room and transport to Sterile processing department on the decontamination side.

  • Responsible for general upkeep of the rooms to provide safe, clean, and organized environment for patient/ team members. Restock sterile supplies in the operating rooms. Coordinate with the Peri-Op materials manager any missing or low stock items.

  • Transport clean equipment to the storage areas.

  • Return sterile supplies to shelves as received from central supply, using appropriate precaution to maintain sterility.

  • Promotes, ensures, and improves customer service to internal/ external customers by demonstrating skills which are consistent with the organization's philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations and quality service.

  • Assume other activities and responsibilities from time to time as directed. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Basic Qualifications:


  • Minimum two (2) years of current Hospital or Ambulatory Surgery Center setting, where the primary or basic objective was to provide support to a surgical crew.

  • Education

  • High School Diploma OR General Education Diploma (GED) required.

  • License, Certification, Registration

  • BLS certification (AHA) required or obtained within 6 months of hire date.

  • Additional Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge of surgical instruments and surgical supplies.

  • General understanding of medical and aseptic techniques required.

  • Extensive knowledge of surgical patient positioning equipment.

  • Extensive knowledge of surgical setup in operating room environment required.

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills required.

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift a minimum of 50 pounds required.
