Pharmacy Econ Fellow

This 2-year fellowship is offered in partnership between Kaiser Permanente and Chapman University School of Pharmacy. The fellowship is based in Kaiser Permanente Pharmacy Services at Downey, California. Receive training in population care management, economics and policy in an integrated managed care organization to become a health care leader. The fellow will gain experience in integrated health-systems administration, managed care priorities, drug information, formulary and pharmacy benefit design decision making, health information technology, medication utilization, and quality management. The fellow will receive formal mentoring from senior Kaiser Permanente pharmacy executives. Chapman University School of Pharmacy will offer a teaching certificate program and will provide highly individualized postgraduate training designed to prepare the fellow to function as an independent researcher. The fellow will also work with a mentor on a research project.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develop skills and expertise necessary to design, implement, and manage a safe, effective and efficient medication-use system.

  • Gain competencies in the following areas:

  • Formulary and pharmacy benefit design, Formulary System management, Pharmacy Benefit Management, Health economic and outcomes evaluation, Health Technology assessment;

  • Medication utilization management, Medication distribution systems and control, Managed care priorities (CMS Five Stars, transitions of care, medication therapy management), Drug information, Medication utilization review, Medication trend assessment, Medication-use policy initiates, Cost control strategies, Medication-use guidelines, evidence-based protocols and care paths, Disease state and wellness management, Provider education including academic detailing;

  • Pharmacy services management, Pharmacy services operations, Technology and automated systems management, Health information technology management, Supply chain management, Quality management, Compliance, Medication management regulations, Benchmarking;

  • Leadership/Advanced Leadership, Human resources management, Strategic Planning, Performance management, Financial management;

  • Research and academics, Teaching (including teaching certificate program), Biomedical research ethics, Design, execution and report of results of a research project, Abstract preparation and submission, Research presentation, Manuscript preparation for publication in peer-reviewed journals

  • Licensed as an Intern Pharmacist in the state of California by October 31st

  • Licensed as a Pharmacist in the state of California by December 31st
