Senior Director Pharmacy Quality & Medication Safety

Description: This position provides senior director level leadership, direction, decision-making and oversight for the Pharmacy Quality, Medication and Patient Safety programs at the national level. Provides pharmacy professional participation in local, regional and national committee structures to ensure safe and effective medication use processes. Leads national initiatives, work groups and collaboratives.


Essential Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for design, development and implementation of Pharmacy medication safety and quality systems, processes and databases to improve medication use and safety on a national level.
  • Develops and coordinates data and reports to enhance medication safety at the national level.
  • Facilitates and leads the design and implementation of national scorecards/dashboards to improve performance in quality related measures and practices.
  • Coordinates Quality and/or Medication safety data tracking and trending on a national basis.
  • Works toward One Pharmacy, as aligned with National Pharmacy Programs and Services strategy, with respect to designing and implementing medication safety processes and safeguards into pharmacy operational work flows.
  • Serves as pharmacy representative to national committees and task forces dealing with medication safety and medication risk management.
  • Responsible for coordination and completion of documentation for all Regional Health Plan audits and accreditations (e.g. NCQA, Medi-Cal quality audits, DMHC Audits and Surveys).
  • Responsible for coordination and presentation of Quality and Medication Safety Reports to national quality/safety committees and support for KP National Quality Committee.
  • Provides oversight/auditing for safety practices to be incorporated into information systems that support pharmacy operations.
  • Leads investigation and resolution of national trending for medication safety and Pharmacy quality.
  • Develops a good working relationship and manages interactions within the organization including leadership from Hospital/Health Plan, the Permanente Medical Groups, Quality Leaders and regional Pharmacy Leaders.
  • Works closely with National Pharmacy Compliance to ensure compliance with local, regional and national policies and procedures related to safety and quality.
  • Serves as the business owner(s) for Pharmacy Adverse Drug Event and Drug Furnishing Incident database and other safety and quality related Pharmacy programs.
  • Provides oversight of pharmacy professional practices to maintain the safety of medication therapy and quality of services at the member level.
  • Develops and implements training and education related to Medication Safety and Quality service for pharmacy staff, residents and members.
  • Responsible for oversight of the High Alert Medication Program.
  • Provides oversight on completion of high-risk medication pharmacy audits and remediation.
  • Assists with development of program budget and financial operations.
  • Presents program updates and communicates urgent needs to Pharmacy Leadership.
  • Identifies and creates national solutions to address pharmacy quality and safety issues, especially in the area of specialty medications.
  • Prioritizes program initiatives based on urgency form remediating, risk level introduced, and operational impact.
  • Coordinates national initiatives related to specialty medications to ensure quality, safety, and financial oversight.
  • Ensures oversight to specialty Pharmacy to ensure organizational quality and compliance (i.e. URAC accreditation & FDA REMS), and patient safety monitoring through clinical case management processes.


  • Basic Qualifications:
    Experience
  • Minimum ten (10) years of leadership-level experience and documented record of success.
    Education
  • Degree in Pharmacy required.
    License, Certification, Registration
  • Licensure as a registered pharmacist in a KP region required.


    Additional Requirements:
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize/apply knowledge of Outpatient, Inpatient and Clinical Pharmacy operations, design, systems, technology, and personnel management; quality assurance, quality improvement/management and medication safety processes and systems, patient care evaluation, data analysis and presentation, utilization review, risk management, accreditation and licensing processes, survey research methodologies; Pharmacy and related Medical, Nursing and other health care laws, regulations and standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with physicians and health care administrators.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage professionals and others through influence and collaboration across multiple sites.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead and direct peer group and interdisciplinary project teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of personnel management principles and techniques.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills (written and verbal) required.
  • Strong ability to direct and motivate others required.
  • Strong ability in the use of influence and change management skills required.
  • Strong strategic and systems thinking skills required.
  • Strong ability to analyze, understand and communicate complex issues and trends required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a matrix environment, while developing effective relationships and achieving results required.
  • Proficiency with personal computer necessary for leadership communication and monitoring and reporting quality and operational performance.
  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.


    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Pharmacy residency (PGY1) preferred.
  • Performance Improvement experience preferred.
  • Strong preference to licensure as a registered pharmacist in California.
  • Pharm.D. Degree preferred.
