Perioperative Materials Management / Inventory Specialist

Description: Assists with the management of materials cost containment within the Operating Room. Maintains the inventory control system and database. Ensures compliance with Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) agreements. Responsible for achieving all Service Area and National Contracting and Purchasing (NCAP) cost savings goals. Works with the Perioperative Manager and the local Labor Management Partnership representative to identify and achieve cost savings and implement safety products.

Essential Functions:
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of a perioperative materials purchasing strategy for the Operating Room that is consistent with the overall national sourcing strategy to ensure KP receives the best value for dollars spent on products and services.
  • Supports Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) agreements and NCAP goals including: Transacts contracts through the appropriate purchasing channels (e Procurement or TIMS/MMS); Conducts trend analysis and compliance monitoring; Recommends changes, additions and deletions to contracts; Advises and alerts NCAP and GPO of new services that will require new products and, thus, new contracts.
  • Insures that all Internal Audit Controls are followed.
  • Identifies and implements Product Utilization savings.
  • Supports Physicians and other health care provider peer groups in their standardization efforts.
  • Maintains the inventory control system and database, with responsibility for the daily management of information systems processing requirements for administering supplies, equipment and services transactions and requests.
  • Works actively with the Local Product Councils, Perioperative Cost Reduction groups, and the Labor Management Partnership to comply with national standards, to trend spend; to meet budgets and to identify cost savings opportunities.
  • Assists the Perioperative Manager and team by researching supply cost variances.
  • May provide direction to other staff in meeting the Operating.
  • Room service requirements.

  • Basic Qualifications:
    Experience
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in combination of purchasing, contracting, material management or other related areas, including experience with material management systems and control of an inventory of $5m to $10m.
    Education
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, material management, economics or related field, OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
    License, Certification, Registration
  • N/A

    Additional Requirements:
  • Proficient in a variety of software applications with the ability to develop complex spreadsheets and write business communications.
  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a union environment preferred.
  • Experience in a healthcare environment with specific knowledge of Operating Room medical/ surgical products preferred.
  • Professional certification such as a Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM) preferred.
  • Significant knowledge of products/services and their market environment within the scope of Kaiser Permanente's procurement and logistics programs preferred.
