Under direct supervision assists Gastroenterologists and RN's with Gastroenterology procedures and treatment of patients. Performs a variety of routine patient care, sterilization of equipment after procedures, and other clerical duties when needed. Makes members/patients and their needs a primary focus of one's actions; developes and sustains productive member/patient relationships. Actively seeks information to understand member/patient circumstances, problems, expectations, and needs. Builds rapport and cooperative relationship with members/patients. Considers how actions or plans will affect members; responds quickly to meet member/patient needs and resolves problems.




Essential Responsibilities:



  • This position, knows and complies with all Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies and procedures. Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice in every interaction with patients, colleagues, providers, and leadership. Ensures patient safety in the preparation and provisioning of care related to but not limited to medications, procedures, infection prevention, fall prevention, including consistent use of two patient identifiers and procedural time outs. Reports safety hazards, accidents and incidents, and unsafe working conditions promptly.

  • Assists Gastroenterologists and RN's with colonoscopy and panendoscopy procedures inluding the application of abdominal pressure when needed. Assists with biopsies and other procedure needs.

  • Prepares examination and treatment rooms by cleaning, stocking, and arranging supplies, equipment and instruments.

  • Uses high level disinfection techniques to clean endoscopy scopes via manual cleaning and/or washer sterilizers. Maintains scopes and equipment in proper working condition. Cleans and packages reusable instruments in preparation for sterilization.

  • Performs general clerical and reception duties including communication by phone or in person. Demonstrates computer literacy for charting and reviewing in an automated medical record. Performs other duties as assigned, such as assisting in orienting and training new employees, transporting equipment or patients and other duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Reviews and communicates to physician and other medical providers appointment schedule to determine patient visit order and solicits special instructions or requests for the day, greets and escorts patient to examination or treatment room in a respectful, warm and caring manner. Takes patients vital signs, e.g. blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature, height and weight; records information in patients medical records; and reports findings to appropriate personnel, according to standard requirements. Works within scope of practice and according to KP policies. Complies with regulatory requirements and standards of care.




Basic Qualifications:


Experience



  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in providing administrative support in the care and treatment of patients.



Education



  • Completion of a Medical Assistant training program of at least six (6) months in length.

  • High School Diploma OR General Education Diploma (GED) required.



License, Certification, Registration



  • Must have current BLS certification.



 


Additional Requirements:



  • Experience using on-line scheduling system.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology is critical.

  • Demonstrated customer service skills, customer focus abilities and the ability to understand Kaiser Permanente customer needs.

  • Must be able to obtain CBSPD certification for scope reprocessing after one year of employment.

  • Highly effective interpersonal and verbal communication skills to include excellent telephone etiquette and an ability to manage a variety of patients questions.



 


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Minimum six (6) months of previous work experience in Gastroenterology in an outpatient and/or hospital setting preferred.
