Performs a variety of eye care duties to assist the eye care providers in the examination and treatment of eye disorders, using knowledge of basic ophthalmic techniques and procedures. Under direct supervision, assists patients in selecting eyeglasses, measures patient's facial and ocular dimensions, orders, checks, and adjusts eyeglasses to fit patient, and performs duties related to optical dispensing. May work with Optometrist in fitting contact lenses.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • This position, knows and complies with all Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies and procedures. Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice in every interaction with patients, colleagues, providers, and leadership. Ensures patient safety in the preparation and provisioning of care related to but not limited to medications, procedures, infection prevention, fall prevention, including consistent use of two patient identifiers and procedural time outs. Reports safety hazards, accidents and incidents, and unsafe working conditions promptly.

  • Greets patients, ascertains their needs. Prepares examination and treatment rooms for use by eye care providers by cleaning, stocking and arranging supplies and equipment.  Cleans and maintains ophthalmic instruments appropriately. Performs clerical and reception duties as directed.

  • Reviews appointment schedule to determine patient visits order; greets and escorts patients to examination or treatment room in a courteous manner, instructs or assists patient in preparation for scheduled procedures.

  • Performs basic and routine vision screening examinations as directed, recording data on standard format for interpretation by the eye care provider. This includes pertinent medical and ocular history, visual acuity, stereopsis, color testing, tonometry, and lensometry. Performs other technical skills as directed by an eye care provider including keratometry, auto refractometry, automated perimetry, ocular imaging and other digital imaging tests.

  • Administers eye medications as ordered by the Ophthalmologist and Optometrists, and demonstrates knowledge of ocular pharmacology to assigned provider annually, or as requested.

  • Greets and signs-in patients when they arrive. Schedule patients for eye examination. Answers telephone, schedules appointments and basic telephone triage with the help of the provider. Additionally, answers direct inquiries from patients regarding the various types of lenses, frames, and optical items including cost estimates. Contact patients, by phone or mail, when eyeglasses are ready for dispensing. May also call patients to remind them of their Eye appointment and inform them of their optical hardware benefit.

  • Verifies patient's KP Optical benefits, checks eligibility, records benefits usage and charts information utilizing appropriate and related systems. Enters orders on POS system for manufacturing with direction from senior staff members. Will be required to use HealthConnect for looking up, charting and recording information.

  • Assists patients in selecting eyeglasses to prescription specifications. Measures patient's facial and/or ocular dimensions. Measures base curve, thickness, and power to verify prescription accuracy of eyeglasses and/or contact lenses.

  • Trouble shoots patient vision and frame fitting problems.  Adjusts finished eyeglasses for proper fit. Performs minor frame repairs. Inspects and verifies new product and patient orders coming from the optical lab.

  • Assists in inventory control. Helps to return discontinued frames to the optical lab. Opens and closes POS system daily. Helps to maintain display areas in a neat and orderly manner, including duties such as stocking shelves, labeling frames and products on display and cleaning demonstration lenses are requested or needed. Keeps current on optical product and availability. Responsible for daily cash handling and filing.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Minimum of six (6) months of satisfactory full time experience as a nursing/medical assistant under eye care supervision OR completion of a JCAHPO approved course for Ophthalmic Assistants.

  • High School Diploma OR General Education Diploma (GED) required.
  • License, Certification, Registration
  • Must pass the technical skills assessment for those skills listed in the job responsibilities as administered by the Eye Care Department representative prior to hire.

  • Additional Requirements:
  • Exceptional manual lensometry and glasses troubleshooting skills required.
