Nurse, Vascular Access/IV Therapy

To provide direct administration of IV Therapy as prescribed by the provider. To conduct associated teaching, assessment, monitoring, and evaluation of patients, families, and/or other professional nurses in administration of the prescribed IV treatment. To plan and coordinate IV Therapy with other services.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Directs administration of prescribed IV Therapy and/or teaches the patient and family member how to safely administer the prescribed IV Therapy.

  • Inserts and removes vascular access devices in accordance with established guidelines and vascular access device care.

  • Monitors lab values and alerts physician if lab values diverge from parameters set by physician.

  • Assesses and monitors the patient and family member in the administration of the IV therapy for compliance with the treatment regimen.

  • Assesses the effects of the IV therapy, expected responses and adverse reactions any potential complications.

  • Instructs and teaches the patients, family member, and other providers, responses to therapy and appropriate actions to take in case of complications.

  • Maintains close contact with the physician regarding patient's progress, health status, and any significant charges.

  • Assesses the patient and family needs for supportive care and confers with the primary provider for additional services if indicated.

  • Discusses IV care management, scheduling, and treatment plan with the nursing supervisor, pharmacist, and/or other involved providers.

  • Handles triage requests for unscheduled infusions or vascular access device placement using established guidelines associated with length of infusion

  • Conducts dressing and line changes as needed.

  • Maintains supplies.

  • Provides discharge instructions, if applicable.

  • Explains procedures to patients and conducts applicable education on what to do if problems arise, medication

  • side effects, care of infusion site, etc.

  • Documents all activities in KP HealthConnect or ASAP

  • Maintains competency in placing, removing, and maintaining vascular access devices including PICCs, ultrasound-guided IVs, and mid line catheters.

  • Works with the physician to determine the appropriate vascular access device based on the needs of the member.

  • Performs other related duties as directed.

  • Rotating Schedule


    Basic Qualifications:


  • Minimum two (2) years of experience as a registered nurse in an emergency room, acute care or recovery environment is required.

  • Minimum two (2) years of IV Therapy experience is required.

  • Education

  • Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program.

  • License, Certification, Registration

  • Current RN license in MD, VA, or DC, depending on medical center assignment is required.

  • BLS Certification from the American Heart Association is required.

  • Additional Requirements:

  • Updated knowledge and proficiency in IV therapy and equipment is required.

  • Knowledge of parameters for initiation or continuing therapy is required.

  • Proficient in use of applicable computer software required.

  • Able to pass a regional competency exam within 3 months of hire.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with patient populations ranging from infant to geriatrics preferred.

  • Experience inserting, removing, and maintaining vascular access devices is preferred. 

  • BSN is preferred.
