Director Architecture/Planning & Design - Oakland, CA

Description: Management of the activities of Architects and/or Engineers involved in master planning and design and engineering for medical centers, medical office buildings, dental offices, parking structures, and administrative facilities. Applies diversified knowledge of architectural and engineering practices in project work. Reviews and approves conceptual designs. Directs development of new methods or techniques incorporating renewable energy and sustainable technology concepts into new generation hospital design and retrofit projects. Viewed as a content expert in their area of expertise. Makes decisions independently on architectural problems and methods and represents the architectural effort within the projects to which the position is assigned in the resolution of technical questions and the coordination of the architectural work. Responsible for the management of a department and/or direction of multiple departments or functions and all project and departmental budgets.

Essential Functions:
  • Leads the management team to establish strategic plans and long term objectives for the functions; may assist with developing cross-functional oriented objectives for NFS Medical Architecture and Engineering functions.
  • Leads and directs architectural/planning and/or engineering activities for multiple functions and/or NFS areas.
  • Accountable for performance and results for functional areas.
  • Executes functional business plans and contributes to the development of functional strategies.
  • Influences the development and execution of KP-wide policies and long-term goals.
  • Participates in development and methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for projects, programs, and people.
  • Applies advanced knowledge of industry and regulatory standards, and design criteria pertinent to engineering and medical architecture planning and design work.
  • Upholds KP's policies and procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable federal, state, and local laws.

  • Basic Qualifications:
    Experience
  • Minimum fifteen (15) years of hospital and/or medical office building planning design, engineering and/or construction experience required.
  • Minimum eight (8) years of leading and managing design and construction for hospital and medical office buildings required.
    Education
  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, planning, or engineering, OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
    License, Certification, Registration
  • N/A

    Additional Requirements:
  • Advanced knowledge (broad expertise or unique knowledge) of Architecture, Planning, and/or engineering policies, practices and systems required.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment.
  • Must be able to mentor and inspire staff.
  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum fifteen (15) years of general architectural planning and construction management experience preferred.
  • Advanced degree and/or post graduate work in specialty field preferred.
  • License or professional certification preferred.
