Description:
Under the supervision of the Senior Associate Dean for Admissions and Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity, the Assistant Dean for Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity (EID) will assist in all  aspects of development, implementation, and oversight of EID strategy throughout the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine. The Assistant Dean will lead students, faculty, administration, and staff towards a comprehensive, integrated approach to educating future physicians who will foster diversity and inclusion in medicine, strive to improve health equity, and meet the health needs of society. The Assistant Dean will lead the development of programs, policies, and practices to promote effective integration of equity, inclusion, and diversity within the school. The Assistant Dean will collaborate with other leaders at local community, state, and national levels to achieve mutual goals in education, healthcare, and community health.


In addition, the Assistant Dean will support student and faculty engagement in high-quality scholarship, outreach, and advocacy related to EID throughout the School and in the surrounding community. The Assistant Dean will advise on the creation and cultivation of programs that make health professions more accessible to students from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine.





Essential Responsibilities:



  • Advise the KPSOM Senior Associate Dean for Admissions and Equity, Inclusion and Diversity and leadership team regarding the development, implementation, and oversight of the strategy to embed equity, inclusion, and diversity in all aspects of the school.

  • Advise the the KPSOM Senior Associate Dean for Admissions and Equity, Inclusion and Diversity regarding the progress in, and potential improvements of, the overall EID strategy, including policies and the inclusivity of the schools environment.

  • Partner with the Office of Admissions and other units in the recruitment, selection, and successful matriculation of students from diverse backgrounds.

  • Partner with the Office Community Engagement and other departments and units to aid in the design, implementation, and continuous quality improvement of pathway programs in alignment with the schools value of promoting inclusiveness and diversity in medical education and the health professions.

  • Leverage the synergy between EID strategies of KPSOM and those of both Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and the Permanente Medical Groups to create and/or engage with existing pipeline programs.

  • In collaboration with the Office of Academic and Community Affairs, facilitate partnerships with other community and academic organizations that are aligned with the schools values of eliminating health disparities and assuring health equity for all, and commitment to inclusiveness and diversity in health professions.

  • Design, implement, and oversee strategies and programs that support recruiting and retaining a diverse group of faculty and staff including those from groups underrepresented in medicine, who exhibit diversity of background, experience, thought, and other characteristics.

  • Assure faculty and staff development by facilitating continuous education on EID themes, including participation in assessment of the ability of faculty to teach utilizing the principles of equity, inclusion, and diversity

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to foster an environment of inclusion through the support of affinity groups and discussion groups. Lead special projects, such as dissemination of resource materials, to further this objective in collaboration with other functions in the school.

  • In partnership with curriculum leaders, ensure that the curriculum content supports the Schools value of promoting inclusiveness and diversity in medical education and the health professions.

  • Collaborate with the Office of Student Affairs to provide for the distinct needs of all KPSOM students.

  • Collaborate with students to foster an environment of inclusion. Lead special projects to further this objective in collaboration with other functions in the School.

  • Help lead EID scholarly initiatives, collaborating with faculty, staff, and students to develop innovative ideas, prioritize pilot projects, and participate in these projects. Collaborate with the Senior Associate Dean for Admissions and Equity, Inclusion and Diversity, and other research leaders to publish scholarship on EID.

  • Serve on relevant KPSOM committees and perform other administrative tasks as needed

  • Supervise Office of EID staff

  • Establish a system of monitoring, assessment, and evaluation regarding EID programs and goals, in consultation with the Senior Associate Dean for Equity, Inclusion and Diversity, and in coordination with the Office of Assessment and Evaluation and Sr. Director of Accreditation and Continuous Quality Improvement. Review, interpret, and report data from a dashboard of relevant process and outcome metrics.

  • Work with KPSOM team members to ensure compliance with WSCUC and LCME accreditation standards related to EID, and to create reports for accrediting bodies

  • As possible, identify funding opportunities, such as grant proposals, to secure resources to amplify student support programs (such as academic support and well-being support) that enhance the sustained recruitment and success of students from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine.

Experience



  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in medical education, other higher education, or an education-focused professional environment.

     



Education



  • MD/DO/PhD/EdD degree

Additional Requirements:



  • Experience with curriculum design, development, evaluation, assessment, and curriculum mapping with respect to competencies and milestones within a medical school.

  • Experience developing and utilizing technology-based instruction, small group education methodology, and assessment/evaluation.

  • Management experience in an academic environment.

  • Experience in management and oversight of curriculum committee work.

  • Expertise in the principles of learning and instructional design, adult learning theory, educational research, development of competency-based education, and assessment of student learning (skills, knowledge, and attitudes).

  • Knowledge of current efforts and best practices to transform medical education using innovative curricula, technologies, and teaching/learning methodologies.

  • Familiarity with a variety of teaching approaches.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders, including project staff and faculty from a variety of disciplines, students, and administration.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams in a complex organization.

  • A record commensurate with an appointment as assistant, associate, or full professor.

  • Distinguished track record of innovative educational leadership, scholarly accomplishment, and effective management.

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-energy environment.

  • Commitment to diversity and to promoting a culture that nurtures various forms of inquiry and scholarship, across multiple disciplines.



 

Preferred Qualifications:




  • Experience in medical education in the areas of equity, inclusion, and diversity in a leadership role.

  • Experience identifying best practices of equity, inclusion, and diversity and facilitating their adoption and implementation at an educational institution.

  • Experience in assuring compliance with relevant laws and policies that are relevant to EID in an educational setting (e.g., Title IX).

  • Experience establishing and/or managing strong partnerships and programs to increase the pipeline of students who are underrepresented in medicine.

  • Experience and knowledge in research and practice in the fields of diversity, social justice, critical methodologies, and/or equity in education.

  • Experience contributing to and cultivating diverse, equitable, and inclusive participatory faculty and leadership governance structures.

  • Knowledge of WASC and LCME Principles of Accreditation.
