The Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine is
devoted first and foremost to offering an outstanding, forward-thinking medical

broadly about the ways care can be more effective for everyone and learn how to

The Director of Health Systems Science Research Operations is responsible for the daily research operations and management of research staff and projects for the Health Systems Science department at the School of Medicine.  The Director is responsible for the organization of work, compliance, grant submission, supervision of employees, staff development, expense control, process improvement, and problem solving pertaining to the research projects within the Department of Health Systems Science.  As needed, s/he serves as the project lead for research studies, including orphan studies lacking a designated project manager.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Research Staff, Infrastructure, and Strategy Development
  • Build and manage a team of highly skilled and efficient research staff within the HSS department including program managers, research coordinators, research associates, in an effort to assure compliance with regulatory agencies and increase procedures and efficiencies.
  • Develop infrastructure and set up logistics to support research projects within the department of HSS such as protocols, human subjects, data management security, intervention implementation, and other requirements.
  • Supervise the HSS research employees, including determining qualifications, hiring, maintaining and improving competence, assigning work, coaching, training (e.g., orientation, in-service and continuing education), evaluating performance, compensation, discipline and terminating employment.
  • Oversee the daily coordination of work assignments for research staff and other subordinate staff within the HSS department.
  • Assist the chair in strategic planning for the Department's research missions and growth.
  • Participate in the Department's future research planning and budgeting processes.
  • Research Grant Pre-Award and Post-Award Administrative Supervision
  • Manage and administer grants, contracts, and budget preparations and expenditures.
  • Oversee grant application processes including preparation, submission, review and approvals.
  • Work closely with grant administrators and other internal and external partners on research budget and finances.
  • Other Research-Related Regulatory and Administrative Supervision
  • Enforce policies and procedures to ensure the smooth operation of all research facilities for the HSS department.
  • Perform or appropriately delegate routine administrative functions such as reviewing and approving time, equipment relocation/disposal requests, Peoplesoft requisitions, staff access requests, parking passes, etc. to support ongoing research operations.
  • Provide guidance to staff in establishing priorities to ensure that workflow is controlled and meets the needs of the department. Communicate and ensure compliance with institutional/departmental priorities, initiatives, safety standards, and external legal regulations.
  • Direct and facilitate the process of new research protocol development, review and implementation within the Department. Anticipate the effects of changing regulatory requirements. Direct the development of policies, procedures, and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with management in cross-functional process improvement, collaborative teamwork, open communication and problem solving to ensure the effective coordination and integration of services within and between units.
  • Stakeholder Relations
  • Serve as the resource for sponsors, cooperative groups, stakeholders, investigators, and research staff for organizational requirements, site visits, audit preparation and assistance.
  • Attend local and national meetings as assigned and assures positive representation at these meetings.
  • Develop and manage relationships and deliverables with collaborators, including pilot sponsors, research collaborators/PI's, and funders.
  • Scholarly Contributions
  • Contribute intellectually to scientific manuscripts and other scientific products as co-author.
  • Basic Qualifications:
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience managing research operations, including supervisory and fiscal responsibilities.
  • Education
  • Master's degree in Public Health or related field
  • License, Certification, Registration

  • Additional Requirements:
  • Grant writing and submission experience.
  • Strong expertise in project/program administration/management including designing and implementing new projects/programs, goal setting, monitoring execution, and stakeholder management.
  • Familiarity with general healthcare research and/or clinical sciences.
  • Knowledge of research compliance protocols and regulations.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong people skills and works well in a team as well as independently.
  • Ability to work in a fast changing environment.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficiency with basic and/or clinical research techniques and protocols.
  • Research and/or business operations experience in an academic environment.
  • Doctoral degree in Public Health or related field
