The Health Sciences Librarian supports the teaching, learning, and research endeavors of the Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine. The Health Sciences Librarian oversees the daily operations and administration of the School of Medicine Library to provide high quality, cost effective information services to faculty, staff, and students. This position will lead collection management, procure appropriate electronic and print resources, and conduct ongoing usage evaluation to ensure the most effective resource allocation. The Health Sciences Librarian conducts manual and on-line data searches using electronic information sources to acquire and disseminate information to end-users. Successful candidates will be energetic self-starters who can integrate library services, evidence-based practice, technology, and assessment into the curriculum of the School of Medicine. The Health Sciences Librarian will participate in the research and scholarship efforts of the School. 

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Selects and acquires texts and journals in the appropriate format to ensure a current and up-to-date collection of materials to support the needs of students, faculty, and staff. Provides literature unavailable in the library through a nation-wide system of inter-library borrowing or on-line searches. Maintains accurate cataloging; creates LibGuides to facilitate easy access to resources. Directs the daily operations of the medical library.

  • Conducts literature searches across domains, including clinical medicine, health systems science, foundational science, and education, including systematic and integrative reviews, at the request of faculty and staff; may participate in the development of abstracts, grant proposals, presentations, and publications.

  • Provides training, support, and documentation to end users on library services and resources; using a variety of modalities, instructs on use of bibliographic software, periodical indexes, on-line databases, open access, and reference tools; provides guidance on information literacy, evidence-based practice, ethical scholarship, critical analysis, research reproducibility, systematic reviews, and technology.

  • Participates, as directed, in the development, delivery, assessment, and/or evaluation of information literacy curriculum for medical students.

  • Develops library policies and procedures in collaboration with School leadership; conducts internal and/or external benchmark comparisons to evaluate current solutions, metrics, processes, and tools against best practices; provides data and reports in support of the LCME accreditation standard for library services and resources.

  • Develops and administers the library budget; engages with vendors and partners to provide cost-effective solutions; maintains good relations with other departments/libraries to enhance services and promote cooperative arrangements that are mutually beneficial.

  • Conducts regular needs assessments, maintains usage statistics, and makes recommendations to leadership on changes to the collection; proactively promotes library resources and tools.

  • Maintains knowledge of best practices and emerging trends in medical education, scholarly communication, copyright, information literacy, health information resources, and the role of technology in academic medical libraries.

  • Ensures information resources that reflect health disparities and the cultural perspectives of underrepresented groups.

  • May serve on School committees or represent the organization at conferences, professional associations, and peer groups.

  • Monitors compliance with regulatory standards and recommendations (including copyright, fair use, and licensing).

  • Minimum three (3) years of academic health sciences library experience, preferably working with medical students.

  • Education

  • Master's degree in Library Science (MLS) or Master's degree in Library Information Studies (MLIS) from an ALA- accredited institution.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, and monitor new programs and services; experience in developing library policies and procedures.

  • User-centered service orientation.

  • Experience with online instructional design or teaching in the health sciences.

  • Desire to explore andragogy and learning theories that can enrich teaching practices.

  • Proficiency in the use of technology for the delivery of library services and training.

  • Knowledge of critical analysis and evidence-based practice.

  • Experience providing library outreach services.

  • Exemplary written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal skills to engage with stakeholders at all levels internally and externally.

  • Organized self-starter, with strong investigative, time and task management skills, and the ability to juggle competing priorities, multiple projects, and team members' needs.

  • Superior business acumen; uses industry knowledge and data to understand and improve business results.

  • Travel may be required.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with data collection, analysis, and metrics reporting.

  • Additional advanced degree.

  • Certification in Medical Librarianship by the Medical Library Association preferred.

  • Membership in the Medical Library Association's Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP).

  • Awareness of emerging library technology and trends.
