Responsible for planning, organizing, conducting and implementing individual and/or collaborative nursing science research methodologies, designs, studies/projects, the findings of which are utilized to provide nursing staff/management with a scientific basis for better understanding clinical patient care issues and informing/improving clinical nursing practice, processes and systems ; improve patient care and resource utilization; and plan effective nursing interventions that prevent patient care problems and predict desired outcomes .Acts as an expert authority/consultant to clinical managers and Clinical Nurse Specialists in redesigning nursing, patient care and clinical systems and processes.


Essential Responsibilities:

  • Independently designs, develops and conducts well defined research studies/projects including study design (controls and dependent/independent variables), identifying and stating the research problem to be  studied, study feasibility, selection of methods of data collection and statistical analysis, analyzing/interpreting  research data and disseminating research findings.

  • Establishes and implements technical guidelines, procedures and protocols within which nursing research is carried out.

  • As appropriate, provides consultation to Clinical Nurse Specialists and other nursing staff conducting research relative to study designs, methodology, statistical tests and analyses and characteristics of research samples and data.

  • Acts as an expert resource/authority  for nursing managers and other personnel relative to conducting research and utilization/application of research findings to measure/improve cost, quality and clinical outcomes and redesign patient care systems, processes and nursing practices, interventions and development programs.

  • Provides leadership for development of research competencies of Clinical Nurse Specialists who act as clinical change agents across the continuum of care.

  • Supports strategies and initiatives to change patient care practices by assessing caregiver skills; developing education/training programs for successful implementation of initiatives and application of research findings to clinical processes/ systems; managing projects to achieve improved patient care outcomes across the continuum of care.

  • May develop and implement strategies for identifying and obtaining extramural / grant funds for proposed research projects and studies.

  • Prepares research grant proposals.

  • Develops, implements and monitors ethical/legal standards, protocols and guidelines for nursing research studies and the nurse's responsibility to protect patients involved in patient care studies including any appropriate review processes at the departmental and/or institutional level.


  • Basic Qualifications:

    Experience

  • Minimum four (4) years of experience in clinical nursing or education or management in an integrated delivery system or multi-faceted network required.

  • Education

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or related field required.

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

  • License, Certification, Registration

  • Current/valid California RN license required.



  • Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct multivariate and univariate, quantitative and qualitative statistical applications, including using a statistical software package.

  • Utilize quality control methods in data analysis.

  • Utilize effective written and verbal communication skills required.

  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.



  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum three (3) years of experience conducting independent qualitative clinical research, the findings of which have been published in peer reviewed professional journals.

  • Clinical experience is preferred in specialty needed for research project.

  • Master's Degree in a related discipline preferred.

  • Knowledge of and experience in palliative care, advance illness and advance care planning.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, and coordinating training programs.



  • Notes:


  • This is a Part-Time/Temporary position for approximately up to four (4) years. 

  • The Major responsibilities include:  Perform proactive telephone outreach and comprehensive screening of frail patients for palliative care needs and link patients to appropriate KP and non-KP services and programs

  • Screen incoming referrals for patient appropriateness for home-based palliative care (HBPC) and triage patients who do not qualify for HBPC to other appropriate services

  • Undergo training as a Life Care Planning instructor in order to train and mentor clinicians on advance care planning conversations (Last Steps)

  • Undergo other advanced training in palliative care practice as needed to serve as a resource and mentor
