Simulation Technicians provide critical technical and curricular development support and work with other staff, faculty and clinicians at KP School of Medicine to ensure consistent and effective delivery of medical simulation events, programs and services to students and faculty. More specifically, they ensure the overall operation of simulation and audio-visual technology, coordinate the alignment of simulation resources with educational needs, assist in training of faculty and users of all equipment, and support simulation center organizational operations and evaluation.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Audio-Visual Technology

  • Setup, operate, maintain and troubleshoot classroom AV equipment.

  • Perform the programming of systems to record and release digitized AV data.

  • Manage, store, organize and archive AV recordings.

  • Education

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to effectively integrate healthcare simulation methodologies into the curriculum.

  • Maintain a well-run and effective learning environment that best leverages available technologies.

  • Train faculty and learners in the use of healthcare simulation technologies.

  • Healthcare

  • Set up, operate, maintain and troubleshoot medical equipment and documentation systems.

  • Accurately recreate clinical settings and scenarios by applying healthcare knowledge (medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, medications, procedures and medical conditions).

  • Information Technology

  • Learn and implement new software and hardware quickly and independently.

  • Install, upgrade, operate, troubleshoot and maintain computer-based equipment and associated infrastructure.  This may include electronic medical records, simulation technology, medical technology, and AV equipment

  • Ensure the security of IT equipment and infrastructure.

  • Provide technical support and instruction to all users of the simulation facility.

  • Research and explore new simulation related technologies and make purchasing recommendations to Director of Simulation.

  • Management and Operations

  • Assist in operational functions including inventory management, scheduling, budgeting and departmental operations workflow.

  • Establish and maintain processes, procedures, policies, work standards.

  • Promote the simulation program, facility and organizational briefings, reports, presentations, tours, events and digital media.

  • Research and Evaluation

  • Assist the Director for Simulation with the monitoring, evaluation and reporting on departmental goals, objectives and programs.

  • Assist in the development, dissemination and evaluation of metrics and tools to assess the effectiveness of clinical simulation.

  • Develop and contribute to presentations and publications to report on research results.

  • Simulation

  • Instruct faculty and learners on the safe operation of simulators and simulated environments.

  • Assist with accreditation of the program/facility as it relates to simulation.

  • Serve as an internal consultant for simulation design.

  • Theatrics

  • Assist in training and evaluation activities of standardized patients.

  • Fill-in as actor for standardized patient activities as needed.

  • Coordinate positioning of cameras and lighting for recording or live streaming key elements of a simulation experience.

  • Simulate a clinical environment and scenario by creating and using applications, sound and lighting effects, props and moulage.

  • Perform as camera operator of handheld and mobile equipment, as requested

  • Strong written and oral communications skills, including ability to convey technical and medical information to a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to use word processing and other Microsoft Office programs to prepare documents, presentations, and correspondence with speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to learn additional software programs, devices and hardware, including audiovisual and computerized simulation equipment.
  • Organizational skill to allocate resources, track and complete various projects, maintain accurate records, etc.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, including establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with diverse staff, faculty and students.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Self-motivated with the flexibility and adaptability to respond effectively to changing priorities and frequent interruptions;
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment (30 lbs.) and work with medical devices.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and/or experience in the following areas: education, healthcare and/or information technology
  • BA or BS in a health sciences program, Paramedic or EMT education and certification.
  • Able to work occasional evening/weekends.
  • Principles of adult learning, instructional design, interprofessional education, and/or debriefing and feedback.
  • Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, medications, procedures and medical conditions.
  • Patient safety, human factors, interprofessional practice, and teamwork as they apply to healthcare.
  • Installation, configuration, operation, maintenance, upgrading, and troubleshooting of simulation technology ranging from low fidelity simulators, anatomic models and task trainers to extreme high-fidelity human simulators and virtual reality programs.
