The e-Learning Instructional Designer develops training curriculum, courseware, and tools for instructor led and web-based training for end-users throughout SCAL. Conducts training needs assessments that identifies the scope, time and resources needed to train multiple and complex clinical information systems. Uses instructional design methodologies to define the target audience, describe recommended training methods, goals, objectives, timelines, and deliverables.  Creates curricula, which may include leader guides, job aids, knowledge checks, videos, and web based trainings (WBTs). Maintains online and print training materials.

Essential Responsibilities:

Instructional Design:

  • Develops an Instructional Design or Training Plan that describes the overall training scope, goals, target audience, training strategies, subject matter experts, and timelines.
  • Documents the scope of the training project and obtains approval from sponsors and business/project leaders.
    Curricula and Training Materials:

  • Works closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) to develop courseware and curricula based on approved instructional design techniques to support instructor-led and on-line platforms.
  • Creates print and on-line materials which may include leader guides, participant guides, job aids, videos, and WBTs (web-based training).
  • Creates materials and content for e-learning venues such as KP Learn and MyHelp.
  • Uploads e-learning materials to internal learning management and performance management systems.
    Skills and Knowledge:

  • Stays abreast of training, and development research including adult learning theory, training methods and techniques, product enhancements and current industry standards.
  • Maintains currency in use of authoring and development tools such as Captivate, Camtasia, Lectora, and SnagIT.
    Templates, Tools and Style Guide:

  • Creates, produces, and maintains proprietary tools, templates and a style guide for standardized curricula development.

    Evaluation and Skill Transfer:

  • Mentors team members on instructional design development tools, templates, and applications.
  • Assesses whether training goals and objectives have been met and learners are able to use the systems to perform their job tasks.
  • Conducts on site observations and modifies the curricula and e-learning materials based on feedback.
    Needs Assessment:

  • Consults with leaders of Business, IT, Regional & Medical Center, and other major constituency groups within KP to assess and analyze the learning needs of Medical Center staff across the region based on current and future strategic plans.
  • Develops a Training Needs Analysis document from information gathered from consultation.

  • Basic Qualifications:


    • Minimum five (5) years in the field of Instructional Design for Education and Training and/or systems training, preferably experience with technical and clinical systems training (e.g. Epic, Cerner or other clinical or EMR systems).

    • Bachelor's degree or four (4) years experience in a directly related field.

    • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

    • Proficiency with standard Windows and MS-Office including Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

    • Experience in e-learning development

    • Proficiency in using Captivate software

    • Knowledge of adult learning theory and application.

    • Project management skills.

    • Presentation skills.

    • Strong communication skills.

    • Technical and business writing skills

    • Strong curriculum design skills.  

    • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment.

    • Ability to manage time and multiple projects and assignments effectively without direct supervision.

      Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience with technical training and clinically-based training.

    • Strong experience with instructional design for EMR systems and video development tools such as Captivate is preferred.

    • Clinical license or certification preferred.

    • Proficiency in using Captivate, Camtasia, SnagIT, Adobe Suite and other web-based training authoring tools

    • Working knowledge of virtual classroom.

    • Specialization in content area preferred (e.g., Epic certification or proficiency).

    • Master's degree in Education, e-Learning Instructional Technology, or clinical license.
