The Ambulatory Nursing Professional Development Manager is accountable for coordinating the provision of high quality, reputable, and cost effective core professional development and clinical training services delivered by nurse trainers and nursing professional development consultants. The Ambulatory Professional Development nurse manager will support the Director of Professional Development, Director of Nursing Professional Practice, and The Director of Ambulatory Nursing in providing transformational leadership to achieve performance through actively communicating with all key stakeholders; and ensuring core training and development projects achieve intended milestones and goals according to defined timelines.


Essential Responsibilities:

  • Identifying, planning and implementing training programs and curriculums for new or existing staff in the ambulatory setting.  Develops and implements a plan of education throughout the region that reflects the NW Region's strategic plan as well as all regulatory, professional and accreditation requirements. Develops and delivers high quality, cost effective educational programs with content that is evidence based, follows standards of care and practice, and is in alignment with Kaiser Permanente policies and procedures. Develops materials, education tactics, and programs that are based on adult learning principles and take into account the novice-to-expert framework of skill development and knowledge acquisition. Implements instructional and curriculum design skills (methodology selected is appropriate for topic etc...) and assists others in instructional design. Coordinates, manages and assures continuum of education from orientation through annual required updates to include continuing education for nurses and other members of the interdisciplinary team in Ambulatory Care. Activities to include scheduling and coaching various presenters/trainers; evaluating presentations; providing feedback to presenters/trainers; and implementing suggestions for improvements of the programs. Analyzes regional educational needs and priorities using a shared decision making model to include key operational care delivery leaders, lead clinicians, labor leaders, and appropriate front line staff. Specific activities include identification of performance gaps in maintaining standards, work environment factors, standard performance evaluation criteria/processes and effective training strategies to impact and maintain performance outcomes. Researches, designs, and makes recommendations about the purchase of regional competency based curriculum programs/products to improve knowledge, skills and competencies needed by employees to meet new care delivery models and organizational goals. Assists in developing, providing and facilitating department train-the-trainer sessions and providing peer leadership to trainers and other Nursing professional development specialists as appropriate. Delegates, in collaboration with operational care delivery (Program/Service Area Directors, DAs/MMOs), delivery of regional trainings to service area/dept. specific content experts or trainers (e.g. Trainers RN TLs) when requested or needed at the local/dept. specific area level. Acts as a role model for professional nursing practice and upholding the KP Nursing vision and strategy. Participates in and leads regional and national committees that have impact on nursing practice or delivery of quality and patient centered care.

  • Coordination & Oversight of Nursing trainers and Nursing Professional Development Consultants.  Supervises and coordinates nursing activities necessary to provide excellent patient centered developmental and training programs.Selects, coaches, develops and performance manages training and development staff as assigned and collaborates with appropriate physician and labor partners. Ensures competency is maintained for nurse training and development staff through continuous monitoring, assessment, and development in partnership with Professional Development Specialists, Director of Professional Development, and Director of Ambulatory Nursing. Monitors and controls expenditures, overtime and staffing levels as appropriate for assigned staff. Researches and resolves customer service complaints. Plans, organizes, directs and evaluatestraining and professional development activities to continuously improve quality. Develops, reviews and implements policies, procedures and standardized processes assure the provision of state of the art and evidenced based training and development programs.Represents Ambulatory Nursing/Clinical Optimization in meetings and project groups. Maintain awareness of Regional and National Kaiser Permanente efforts which may impact demand and performance in Ambulatory Nursing/Clinical Optimization. Work closely with Directors to develop mitigation strategies. Serves as the clinical education and professional development content expert who provides direction and consultation to program managers in evaluation, redesign and implementation of optimal and standardized orientation, training, and development programs. Evaluates, drives and implements change management and process improvement activities in order to maximize scope of practice, competencies and sharing of best practices across Ambulatory Care.

  • Basic Qualifications:
    Experience
  • Demonstrated minimum three (3) years of leadership experience including supervisor/management and informal leadership roles.
  • Minimum three (3) years of clinical experience in acute care, ambulatory care, or case management/population health care, services within the last five (5) years.
  • Minimum two (2) years of education experience.
  • Education
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing, health care, or related field.
  • License, Certification, Registration
  • Current Oregon AND Washington RN license required. License in state where assigned required upon hire/transfer, application for license in secondary state required within 2 weeks of hire/transfer and must be obtained within 6 months.

  • Additional Requirements:
  • Strong skills in performance management, coaching and development of staff.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts and procedures as applied to the care of patients in different settings.
  • Clinical expertise in a nursing field (e.g. pediatrics, adult medicine, case management, care coordination, medical or surgical specialty).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current regulations and requirements (i.e., NCQA, The Joint Commission, Boards of Nursing etc).
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and development.
  • Demonstrated skills in facilitating work groups.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum design, development and delivery.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in quality management and change management principles.
  • Working knowledge of computer software programs, desktop publishing and audio-visual equipment and materials.
  • Effective group process and team building skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in didactic presentations, clinical skills assessment methodology and project management.
  • Strong customer focused skills.
  • Strong written and verbal interpersonal skills including ability to successfully resolve conflict.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum three (3) years of management experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years of recent clinical experience in acute care, ambulatory care, or case management/population health care services.
  • Minimum four (4) years of education experience.
  • Health care functions and services-experience working in a population health or case management/care coordination oriented service in either outpatient or inpatient setting.
  • Master's degree in nursing, health care administration, education, business, public administration OR six (6) years of experience in a directly related field.
  • Certification in nursing field of expertise (e.g. Pediatrics, Case Management, Adult Medicine, Education, etc.).
  • Certification in Project Management.
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification or higher.
  • Thorough knowledge of state of the art audio visual and related instructional equipment.  
  • Thorough knowledge of computer skills in work processing, database management, spreadsheet, and desktop publishing.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
