Description:
Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Pathology/Laboratory Director & the Laboratory Administrative Director or designee, & under the direct supervision of the grossing pathologist, prepares human surgical specimens for gross description & dissection including description of gross features & selection of tissues for histological examination. Assists pathologist in the receipt, preparation, & examination of surgical tissue specimens & autopsies. May be regularly assigned to direct & check the work of one or more Pathology Technical Assistants; or who have demonstrated ability to perform the most complex techniques & procedures of the classification in accordance w/ the specifications set by the Chief of Pathology/Lab Director.  Assures that all specimens are appropriately logged, processed, & disposed in a timely & safe manner. All tasks are done courteously & correctly using judgment to respond appropriately to changing workload. Must be willing to work in a Labor/Management Partnership.



Essential Functions:

• May be required to pick up & transport all pathology specimens from laboratory & surgery, verifying specimen identification & resolves discrepancies

• Labels specimens, requisitions, cassettes w/ surgical accession number, legibly & accurately

• Enters accession number, patient & specimen identifiers into computer database

• Processes, prepares & sends specimens to outside laboratory; accurately completes all associated paperwork

• Processes, prepares & distributes intra-facility consultations

• Performs tissue sections according to written policies & procedures

• Sets up necessary equipment, supplies & specimens for gross examination

• Assists pathologist w/ gross examination of surgical specimens, & amputated limbs under direct supervision of the pathologist & stores specimens after examination

• Assists pathologist to perform the gross examinations & dictation of surgical specimens according to written policies & procedures under direct supervision of the pathologist

• Assists pathologist to perform the cutting of various specimens according to established policies & procedures under direct supervision of the pathologist

• Disinfects area/instruments including cryostat

• Assists pathologist preparing fetal/infant cadavers & associated paperwork for shipment to fetal pathologist

• Stores, rotates & disposes of all wet tissues in accordance w/ departmental procedures. Disinfects & maintains specimen storage cabinets

• Disposes of tissues, decanting formaldehyde per department protocol & following all safety precautions

• Receives slides from Regional Lab & distributes slides to pathologist. Verifies accuracy of shipment

• Files, including slides

• Assists w/ stocking supplies & proper utilization of supplies

• Mails & distributes of report

• Answers the telephone & responding to voicemail messages in a timely manner

• According to established facility protocol, conducts daily morgue census; verifies if autopsy is required; & collects permit chart, etc. as assigned

• Properly labels, stores, handles & disposes reagents & hazardous wastes according to local, state & federal regulations

• This may include recycling or reprocessing of reagents used in the dept/unit including neutralization of formaldehyde before disposing

• Performs most complex techniques & procedures of the classifications in accordance w/ the specs set by pathologists

• May be assigned to train staff in all non-grossing duties

• This job may have supervisory responsibilities






Grade: 480

Basic Qualifications:

- Two (2) years of experience as a Pathology Technical Assistant plus the demonstrated ability to perform the most complex techniques and procedures of the classification in accordance with the specifications set by the Chief of Pathology or Laboratory Director

- Technical experience in assisting post-mortem and surgical pathology examinations

- Two (2) years of pathology experience including assisting in surgical pathology examinations; cutting and processing surgical tissues preferred

- Must have an AA in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology, or equivalent education with at least 60 semester hours including, at a minimum, six semester hours each of chemistry and biology and twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination from an accredited institution OR must have previously qualified or could have qualified as a laboratory medical technologist on or before February 28, 1992 OR  On or before April 24, 1995 must have been a high school graduate or equivalent and have either graduated from a HHS approved medical laboratory training program or successfully completed an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician)

- Completion of college level biology courses preferred

- Good working knowledge of basic clinical laboratory and pathology terminology

- Knowledge of pathology/laboratory computer systems

- Ability to write concise descriptions of specimens following department protocols

- Knowledge of pathology and cytology medical terminology preferred

- Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos

- Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language

- Excellent written & verbal communication skills

- Excellent organizational skills necessary to work under time constraints

- Ability to keep detailed records

- Excellent attendance

- Strong customer focus

- Excellent interpersonal skills in working with customers, clinicians & coworkers

- Basic computer keyboard skills & word processing of 20 wpm

- Ability to function according to established policies and procedures under the general supervision, and, as applicable, direct supervision of a pathologist

- Must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment
