THIS POSITION WILL BE A MEMBER OF THE STATUTORY REPORTING
AND INVESTMENT ACCOUNTING TEAM.  THE ROLE
WILL WORK CLOSELY WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS TO ENSURE TIMELY AND ACCURATE
STATUTORY REPORTING.  STATUTORY REPORTING
AND INVESTMENT ACCOUNTING AND REPORTING EXPERIENCE IS PREFERRED BUT NOT
REQUIRED.


Perform accounting, reporting and financial analysis as assigned for the enterprise. This role is responsible for more difficult transactions requiring more experience and judgment. Maintain proper accounting and financial control through reconciliations and analytical analysis related to assigned functional areas. Actively participate and ensure timely and accurate financial statement reporting for Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP), tax and other regulatory reporting. Support accounting-based research and analytical projects. Support internal and external audits of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington and its subsidiaries. Develop and maintain working relationships with operational departments and external vendors. Supports budget process. If assigned to work on federal contracts, this role may be required to undergo and pass a security background clearance per federal government regulations.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Maintain financial control by preparing timely and accurate account reconciliations including reviewing and analyzing accounting entries posted to the general ledger and other sub-ledgers to ensure proper recording of assets, liabilities, revenue, expenses and/or equity. Identifies outstanding issues and resolves through independent analysis, research and follow-up.
  • Performs monthly journal entries and supports the monthly Close process. Includes writing and maintaining documentation on assigned journal entries and other Close procedures.
  • Responsible for preparing accurate and timely financial statement reporting for GAAP, SAP, tax and other regulatory reporting. Participates in the preparation of the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for the enterprise in consolidated and stand-alone reporting formats, distributed to internal and external audiences. Identify and clearly communicate, in writing and verbally, the impact of business decisions on the financial statements. Provide balance sheet and/or income statement analysis. Investigate and communicate budget variances, actual month-to-month or other comparative differences. Responsible for accounting for cash, investments, accounts receivable, inventory, property, claims & IBNR, post-retirement liabilities, debt, revenue, expenses, leases, grants, taxes or other related subjects as assigned.
  • Support management and other activities assigned, which may include ad hoc projects, analysis, process improvements, or representation of Financial Operations on other division initiatives. Develop and maintain working relationships with operational departments including Membership, Patient Financial Services, Claims, Provider Relations & Contracting, Human Resources, Treasury, Legal, Audit Services, Pharmacy, IT, Purchasing, Actuary, Underwriting and national teams.
  • Participates in internal and external audits of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington and its subsidiaries. Ensures accounting procedures comply with GAAP and SAP accounting standards, internal controls and/or other regulatory reporting requirements.

  • Basic Qualifications:

    Experience

  • Minimum two (2) years of accounting and financial reporting experience.

  • Education

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field OR four (4) years of experience in directly related field.

  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

  • Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of GAAP. Working knowledge of accounting cycle and demonstrated ability to compile a full set of financial statements.

  • Demonstrated application of accounting standards to business transactions.

  • Knowledgeable of financial transaction flow within operational and financial systems.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

  • Thinks independently, acts decisively and self-directed.

  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation communication skills. Proven analytical ability, excellent customer service and organizational skills.

  • Ability to identify and solve problems.


  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Four (4) years of accounting and financial reporting experience in a large health care or insurance industry setting.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field.

  • CPA license.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the following: accounting and financial reporting; GAAP and SAP; Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) systems.
