Senior Lean Consultant - Kaizen Practitioner

The Senior Lean Improvement Consultant utilizes principle-based improvement expertise to develop teams to make processes better at all levels for customers.  Use the Toyota Production System to challenge teams to view work differently by taking quick action with small tests of change.  Teach by doing as work teams move closer to single piece flow through quick action.  Achieve system level improvements using strategic thinking and action with cross functional groups.   Model a deep respect for all people in your words and your actions. Develop and grow other Lean practitioners in the Improvement Promotion Office as a standardized work lead for peers.  Collaborate with the Director and Sensei in intaking, organizing, resourcing and supervising process improvement work assignments.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Lean Engagement Lead: Lead improvement engagements including kaizen at all levels of the organization. Use the appropriate methods and tools to help develop everyone's ability to move closer to these principles so that all customers benefit.  See process through the lens of the Toyota Production System by applying principles of Single Piece Flow, Takt, Pull, Just In Timing, and Jidoka to current work process.   Foster psychological safety within teams so we can harness the group's collective intelligence and take quick action to test idea, achieving real time business results.

  • Improvement Partner:  Improvement Partner: Provide consultation and trusted partnership to leaders and teams to make processes better and to develop the management systems to sustain them.  Develop managers, senior leaders and executives in their Lean leadership competencies and help them fulfill their role in our improvement system.

  • IPrO Team Member:  Develop peers in the Improvement Promotion Office by functioning as a standardized work lead.   Intake, organize, resource and supervise process improvement work assignments in collaboration with Director and Lean Sensei.  Contribute to improving our continuous improvement system and practice at KPWA and inter-regionally.  Champion continuous improvement as a people strategy.

  • Basic Qualifications:


  • Minimum ten (10) years of experience in process improvement as an improvement practitioner.

  • Education

  • Bachelor's degree in business, health care, engineering or related field.

  • License, Certification, Registration

  • N/A

  • Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to practice respect for all people and build psychological safety with those who do the work so they can improve the work.

  • Ability to challenge yourself and others to see our own biases so that we can act together to make work better for patients, members and staff.

  • Ability to manage complex consultation engagements from entry and contracting through completion.

  • Skill in systems thinking leads cross functional groups through strategic improvements and front-line groups to understand the organizational impact of their work.

  • Skill in project management and business acumen.

  • Advanced knowledge of kaizen, trystorming, autonomation, normal and abnormal conditions, go/no go gauge, pull systems, systemic integration of quality material and information and hoshin kanri/strategic deployment.

  • Advanced knowledge of all process improvement tools including standardized work, standard work combination sheets, kan ban, 5S/6S, process mapping, value stream mapping.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • The above required ten (10) years of experience in process improvement as an improvement practitioner would encompass a minimum of five (5) years each in two (2) or more industries.

  • Two (2) years process improvement experience as an operational leader.

  • Healthcare industry experience and/or consulting experience involving multiple functional departments/areas.

  • Manufacturing or industrial experience.

  • Led 100 improvement workshops and/or kaizen.

  • Black Belt certification by date of hire/transfer is preferred.

  • Master's degree in health care or business administration.
