Senior Director Public Relations

Provides strategic media oversight, public relations management, consultation, and communication management. Responsible for overall reputation management strategy including development of earned media programs, corporate marketing, and stakeholder communication to promote image of Kaiser Permanente.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • In conjunction with Senior Leadership team, develops relevant corporate Value Proposition and message strategy for MAS stakeholders. Ensures that senior leadership team and all market facing teams, including sales and account management, government relations, public relations, and community benefit, are trained in messaging strategy and that Value Proposition messaging is executed in a consistent manner. Assesses communication skills and methods and adjusts to best and most effective practices. Identifies and prioritizes key stakeholders based upon regional strategy and ability influence outcomes. 
  • Develops and deploys tactical external media and public relations communication plans, including target stakeholders, key messages, timing and distribution. Ensures these plans are aligned with appropriate internal stakeholders including Area Administrators, Regional President, and Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group (MAPMG). 
  • Develops and implements effective media strategies to promote the brand image and reputation of Kaiser Permanente. Creates media relations opportunities in television, radio, social, print and other media to showcase Kaiser Permanente and MAPMG leadership in health, outstanding care, commitment to community, and relevance to the Mid-Atlantic. 
  • Works with senior leaders to provide executive communication support.
  • Ensures that all communications are measurable. Builds processes and expectations for external stakeholder management. Performs back-end analysis, learnings, and feedback for continuous improvement. 
  • Oversees Issues Management Program. 
  • Manages a small team of communications professionals.
  • Compliance: Maintains and supports a culture of compliance, ethics, and integrity. Maintains knowledge of policies and procedures and performs in accordance. Appropriately reports fraud and abuse. 
  • The right candidate must have strong individual drive, be politically astute and have exceptional abilities to influence, coach, and communicate.
  • Basic Qualifications:
  • Minimum fifteen (15) years of experience in community relations, government relations, public affairs or equivalent. Experience must include leadership of inter-disciplinary teams and supervision of communications staff.
  • Minimum five (5) years of supervisory/management experience required.
  • Education
  • Master's degree OR six (6) years of directly related experience is required.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) is required.
  • License, Certification, Registration

  • Strong knowledge of Mid-Atlantic community.
  • Excellent media relationships
  • Demonstrated exceptional written, verbal, and electronic communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and program management skills required.
  • Superb presentation skills.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills required.
  • Strong computing skills in Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel required.
  • Excellent organizational and management skills required.
  • Polished presentation skills required, along with the ability to persuade and create consensus required.
  • Familiarity with organizational communications, media relations, and related spheres of professional communication experience required.
  • Experience working with senior executives and high-level information required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under deadline pressure.
  • Demonstrated strong project and time management skills. Must track multiple deadlines and fiscal elements of assigned projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a marketing department on a team with other professional communicators.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five (5) years of experience managing departmental budgets, implementing multiple workflow processes, and managing operational functions for an agency, department, or similar group preferred.
  • Knowledge of Health Care issues preferred.
  • Ability to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment preferred.
  • Prefer prior experience in a media organization and in a health care organization
