Histology Technician Assistant

Description:

Under direct supervision, provides technical support services for  the histology technicians, Pathology staff and Pathologist. Performs a variety of technical procedures which assist in the production of microscopic slides. Duties include: distribution of slides to Pathologist,  handling, processing,embedding, cutting & staining of specimens, operation & maintaining automated equipment, maintaining slide, block and specimen files & records & performing other duties as needed.



Essential Responsibilities:

  • Divide Pathologist daily workload, organize and distribute slides

  • Perform embedding procedures on tissue specimens

  • Perform limited microtomy on tissue specimens (e.g., autopsy, control tissues, large specimens)

  • Select appropriate stains & chemicals to perform H&E staining procedures

  • Accurately follow established protocols

  • Assist histology technicians in the performance of special stains as assigned

  • Label, package & send out completed slides according to established procedures

  • Prepare, operate & maintain automated equipment according to established protocols

  • Evaluate, assess & adapt procedures to deal w/ problems arising from equipment malfunctions or problems

  • Monitor & document instrument performance; check & recognize malfunctions & identify the need for repair

  • Maintain specimen files by filing, sorting & removing & returning specimens/blocks

  • Answer the telephone or skype; communicate w/ the area pathology departments & record testing requests

  • Serve as a resource person by answering questions and/or assisting in problem solving

  • Identify technical questions for referral to the lead technician or supervisor

  • Communicate problems to supervisors

  • Record quality control data for specimens, instruments, temperatures & reagent

  • Maintain records & files, as assigned, following established procedures

  • Maintain cleanliness & orderliness of assigned areas

  • Order & restock supplies as assigned

  • Demonstrates correct safety practices as defined in established protocols

  • Handles patient specimens, hazardous chemicals & waste, according to policy

  • Implement appropriate procedures used for tissue processing and receive pathology specimens

    I’ve waited to get in to Kaiser for so long and now that I’m in, I’d never let go. I love people that i work with (although just like any other jobs, it has it’s highs and lows), i love my patients, pay is great and benefits are awesome!!
