The Biostatistician I provides statistical support, primarily under the direction of senior scientists, for multiple programs of interdisciplinary research conducted by clinical and health services researchers at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute. The Biostatistician I works closely with clinical and health services researchers to provide statistical input into all aspects of studies. Specific activities may include participating in study design and protocol development, writing statistical analysis plans, performing or overseeing data management activities, conducting statistical analyses, summarizing methods and results of analyses in written reports and/or for peer-reviewed scientific publication.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Assists in data management: Plans and carries out data management activities on research projects (e.g. data cleaning/quality assurance, data documentation, creation of analysis datasets); may provide direction to programmers to carry out data management activities.
  • Conducts statistical analyses and provides statistical consulting: Writes statistical programs in SAS, STATA, and other programming languages; summarizes and interprets the results of statistical analyses, verbally and in writing for investigators and project teams; provides consultation to programmers and investigators regarding choice of statistical methods, use of statistical analysis programs, and interpretation of results.
  • Assists in study design and planning: Reviews and participates in the development of study protocols and grant applications; performs study sample size calculations; assists in the selection of the appropriate study design; identifies and designs appropriate statistical analysis plans; attends study planning meetings and teleconferences
  • Assists in disseminating research: Prepares written summaries of statistical analysis results for use at study meetings and in peer-reviewed scientific publication; presents statistical analyses, methods, and results both within the Institute (at biostatistics group and project team meetings) and outside the Institute (at Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington, national project, and/or national statistical meetings) under the direction of a senior researcher.
  • Supports the development of novel statistical methods by senior statisticians.
  • Develops own statistical skills: Develops new expertise with statistical methods or software through self-study, courses, workshops, seminars.
