The Biostatistician III independently provides statistical support, without direction from senior researchers, for multiple programs of interdisciplinary research conducted by clinical and health services researchers at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute. The Biostatistician III works closely with clinical and health services researchers to provide statistical expertise on all aspects of studies, often acts as the lead statistician, and may act as a co-investigator on research projects. The Biostatistician III ensures the use of appropriate statistical methods and sound interpretation of study results. Specific activities may include participating in study design and protocol development, writing statistical analysis plans, performing or overseeing data management, conducting statistical analyses, summarizing methods and results of analyses in written reports and/or for peer-reviewed scientific publication.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Directs and conducts statistical analysis and provides statistical consulting: Coordinates data analysis activities, which may include writing analysis plans, writing statistical programs in SAS, STATA, and other programming languages, and directing programmers who write statistical programs; summarizes and interprets the results of statistical analysis, verbally and in writing for investigators and project teams; provides consultation to programmers and investigators regarding choice of statistical methods, use of statistical analysis programs, and interpretation of results; provides guidance to other biostatisticians, staff, or students as they carry out statistical analysis.
  • Assists in study design and planning: Helps to focus research plans through clarification of scientific hypotheses; works with principal investigator to ensure appropriate staffing for execution of statistical work; reviews and participates in the development of study protocols and grant applications by writing statistical methods sections for grants; performs study sample size calculations; assists in the selection of the appropriate study design; identifies and designs appropriate statistical analysis plans; attends study planning meetings and teleconferences.
  • Provides mentoring and develops statistical skills of others: Gives seminars or short courses on statistical methods; mentors other biostatisticians, staff, or students. Supports the development of novel statistical methods by senior statisticians.
  • Develops own statistical skills: Develops new expertise with statistical methods or software through self-study, courses, workshops, seminars. Has special expertise in application of at least one type of statistical methodology.
  • Assists in disseminating research: Prepares written summaries of statistical analysis results for use at study meetings; may writes methods and results sections for peer-reviewed scientific publication; presents statistical analyses, methods, and results both within KPWHRI (at biostatistics group meetings, project team meetings, and formal seminars) and outside the Institute (at Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington, national project, and/or national statistical meetings).
  • Assists in and directs data management on research projects: plans data management activities on research projects (e.g. data cleaning/quality assurance, data documentation, creation of analysis datasets); carries out data management activities or provide direction to programmers to carry out data management activities.

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience as a Biostatistician II or comparable position (or a minimum ten (10) years of combined experience as a Biostatistician I or II or similar).

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work on five to seven (5-7) grants/projects.
  • Ability to plan and direct analysis activities on research grants.
  • Ability to mentor junior biostatisticians and programmers.
  • Proficiency with at least one major statistical programming package (SAS, Stata, R/S-Plus).
  • Special expertise in application of at least one type of statistical methodology.
  • At least 20 coauthored, peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals.
