Perform clerical duties and indirect patient care within the Emergency Department. Greet patients as they enter Emergency and direct them as appropriate for medical evaluation. Complete registration process. Assist with hospital admission as directed.  The HUC will also have telemetry monitoring duties

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Is immediately available to consumers as they enter the Emergency Department. Maintains good public relations by reassuring patients and friends/relatives in the waiting room. Directs patient to 'Triage RN' upon arrival. (Triage RN assesses patient including chief complaint, weight, allergies and physical assessment as necessary, and determines UC vs. Acute status). Following triage, asks patient the following questions: a) Are you currently a KFHPW enrollee? B) Do you have other medical insurance? C) Is this a job related injury? D) Is this injury a result of someone else's actions? Adds all patients to the ED log. Completes new patient account creation and registration: a) MGET screen to verify coverage. B) verifies current phone number, address, tetanus status, obtains medications list, verifies age, primary MD, chartbase and verifies allergies; c) KCCS printed for all KFHPW patients; d) set up ARPA account and print labels; e) Patient ID bracelet issues.
  • Directs patient to waiting area. Retrieves chart and ED record. Answers incoming telephone calls and intercom communications. Completes requisitions and orders tests as instructed by the nurse or physician. Assists with admission of patients to the hospital as requested by the nursing staff. Answers HEAR Radio and is responsible for shift emergency bed status. Obtains Emergency Department and inpatient charts from Patient data services. Maintains HUC desk supplies. Maintains a clean, well, lighted reception area. Assures charts are returned to PDS. Checks charts for physician signature/diagnosis and disposition. Completes chart left from previous shift: review for completeness. Check log off procedure and tear down papers. Assists patients to wheelchairs as necessary. Assures current physician call list is posted. Maintains privacy/confidentiality of consumers. Remains calm and efficient in stressful situations. Recognizes the need for intervention by the nursing staff.
  • Has a working knowledge of:  a) CRT; b) Intercom and telephone systems; c) Methods for obtaining department supplies; d) HEAR radio; e) Disaster plan; f) Fire/Bomb threat.  Compiles and records daily statistics.  Maintains 'frequent flyer' files.  E-mails referrals to specialists.  Obtains 'Rodeer' H&Ps as requested.  Attends staff meetings.  Participates in inservice and continuing education and department QA activities.  Maintains a current working knowledge of job responsibilities and procedural changes.  Adheres to department and KFHPW scheduling and attendance policies.  Adheres to departmental dress code.

  • Basic Qualifications:


  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in a health care facility comparable to an Emergency Department.

  • Minimum three (3) years of experience with CRT/data entry.

  • Education

  • High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) is required.

  • License, Certification, Registration

  • Legible penmanship.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
