COMMUNITY AND NATION BY DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING MEDIA RELATIONS STRATEGIES
FOR KAISER PERMANENTE WASHINGTON HEALTH RESEARCH INSTITUTE, A PUBLIC-INTEREST
RESEARCH ORGANIZATION EMBEDDED IN ONE OF THE NATION-S PREMIERE INTEGRATED
HEALTH SYSTEMS. THE PERSON IN THIS POSITION COLLABORATES WITH LEADING HEALTH
SCIENTISTS AND COMMUNICATIONS PROFESSIONALS TO PROMOTE PRACTICAL AND INNOVATIVE
HEALTH RESEARCH THAT IS IMPROVING THE HEALTH OF KAISER PERMANENTE MEMBERS AND

Develop and implement strategy for disseminating news about Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute (KPWHRI) including spreading scientific findings through mainstream media, social media, and various Kaiser Permanente channels, such as its websites and newsletters. Support leadership by providing strategic consultation, planning, and deployment of communications designed to promote understanding of KPWHRI, Kaiser Permanente Washington, and Kaiser Permanente goals and objectives.  Oversee KPWHRI media relations function, collaborating with communication and scientific colleagues nationally and locally to promote the spread of innovation for improving public health and to enhance Kaiser Permanente's brand and reputation.

Essential Responsibilities:
OVERSEE MEDIA RELATIONS
  • Oversee all local, regional, and national media relations activities related to research at Kaiser Permanente Washington-supporting effective dissemination of scientific findings and translation into health care, while enhancing and protecting the image of KPWHRI, Kaiser Permanente Washington, and Kaiser Permanente as a whole.
  • Serve as KPWHRI media lead, collaborating with communication colleagues at Kaiser Permanente's National Program Office and Kaiser Permanente Washington to coordinate proactive and reactive media contacts effectively. 
  • Ensure that KPWHRI leaders, faculty, and staff are proficient at interacting with reporters to deliver key messages about Kaiser Permanente Washington research. This includes training KPWHRI leaders, faculty, and staff to serve as media spokespeople through group and one-on-one sessions as needed. 
  • Collaborate with faculty and communication staff at collaborating research institutions, funders, and journals to ensure appropriate coordination of media relations activities related to joint research.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the KPWHRI Communications Unit, Kaiser Permanente Washington, and Kaiser Permanente national to post news about Kaiser Permanente Washington research to social media. 
  • Monitor and edit monthly reports of articles published by Kaiser Permanente Washington researchers and clinicians. 
  • Work with KPWHRI researchers and others at Kaiser Permanente Washington to share findings with relevant leaders and other influencers.
  • WRITING AND EDITING
  • Write and edit news releases, news and feature stories, social media posts, video scripts, presentations, and other materials as needed to disseminate news about KPWHRI and its research findings.  
  • Work collaboratively with KPWHRI subject matter experts to develop and deliver effective key messages appropriately targeted to a variety of clinical, scientific, and lay audiences.  
  • Collaborate with KPWHRI's graphic designer, video producer, and others to develop images, infographics, videos, and other tools to convey scientific news and findings effectively.
  • Help keep the KPWHRI website up to date.
  • DEVELOP MEDIA RELATIONS STRATEGY
  • Strategy development: Create and deploy an expert, targeted communication strategy for disseminating news and information about KPWHRI, its faculty and staff, and its scientific findings through a variety of channels-including mainstream media, social media, and internal and external Kaiser Permanente communication assets such as websites, newsletters, social media, and email.
  • Alignment: Work with KPWHRI, Kaiser Permanente Washington, and national Kaiser Permanente leaders to ensure KPWHRI's news dissemination strategy and policies are aligned with and support their strategic and business priorities, including enhancing and protecting Kaiser Permanente's reputation, image, and brand as a provider of high-quality, evidence-based health care.
  • Consultation: Provide KPWHRI leaders, faculty members, and staff with expert strategic consultation to support communication regarding major KPWHRI goals and initiatives to a variety of audiences, including national and local Kaiser Permanente constituencies, other scientific and health-related institutions, identified influencers, Kaiser Permanente members, and the general public.
  • Monitoring: Monitor coverage of health research and health care in mainstream media and social media environments to identify perceptual shifts and emerging issues and modify strategy or approach as needed. Monitor KPWHRI media coverage and produce reports on its effectiveness
  • Basic Qualifications:
    Experience
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in media work related to health sciences, including working with news reporters/producers and providing strategic counsel to organizational leadership and spokespersons.
  • Education
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • License, Certification, Registration

  • Additional Requirements:
  • Strong writing and editing skills, including excellent grammar and syntax.
  • Strong proofreading skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to write in journalistic style.
  • Ability to translate complex scientific information to plain language for lay audiences.
  • Written and oral presentation skills.
  • Strategic planning skills and ability to develop and deploy results-focused communications plans.
  • Collaborative work style, including the ability to work through differences, managing conflict to achieve shared goals.
  • Ability to work proactively, responsively, and in a timely manner.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Eight (8) years of communications experience in a health sciences environment.
  • Experience in health research communication, specifically.
  • Experience writing video scripts.
  • Experience producing content and managing social media.
  • Experience in PowerPoint or other presentation software.
  • Bachelor's degree in communication, journalism, science, or related field.
