Coordinates the functional components of surveillance and analysis of the region wide infection Prevention and Control Program. Assists the program manager in providing services necessary for the prevention and control of infection.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Establishes, implements and administers departmental goals, objectives, policies and procedures; conducts ongoing review of hospital policies, procedures and guidelines to identify infection control discrepancies and implements revisions as necessary. Ensures that departmental goals are compatible with, and enhance the hospital and organization's mission, values, and strategic plan. Provides information to hospital committees and department managers to formulate changes in the policies, procedures and/or processes which could reduce the spread of infection.

  • Interacts with physicians, nurses, department managers, supervisors, and occupational health and other professional/non-professional staff members to provide resource information, resolve infection control problems, and identify new opportunities to improve service.

  • Develops and enforces effective policies and procedures for the department that ensure compliance with TJC, OSHA, CMS and other county, state, and federal regulatory agencies.

  • Assists in preparing reports and statistical data for the Infection Prevention and Control Committee, medical staff committees, and other committees as needed.

  • Develops and coordinates the infection prevention and control program throughout the facilities. Implements the program by formulating, establishing and evaluating policies and procedures relating to patient care infection control measures throughout the facilities. Performs an annual assessment and develops action plans from the prior year activities.

  • Makes recommendations regarding construction, renovation, environmental rounds, and assures compliance with national and/or professional standards.

  • Participates in epidemiological investigations of significant clusters of infection above established standards and unusual isolates as directed the Infection Control Manager or Infectious Disease Department. Gathers data, analyzes and prepares documents for focused studies.

  • Basic Qualifications:


  • Minimum two (2) years of experience as an Infection Control professional in an acute care hospital or minimum three (3) years of experience in an acute care hospital setting.

  • Education

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or related field OR four (4) years of experience in a related field.

  • License, Certification, Registration

  • Current Hawaii RN license required upon hire/transfer.

  • Certification in Infection Control (C.I.C.) or able to obtain within two and a half (2.5) years of hire/transfer.

  • Additional Requirements:

  • Proof of APIC Membership or obtained within three (3) months of hire.

  • Knowledge of basic statistics.

  • Skills/abilities: Computer experience with data analysis tools and word processing as a minimum.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of APIC or equivalent, basic course in infection prevention and control.

  • Working knowledge of management support tools; i.e., word processing, spreadsheet, graphic, and communication packages, etc.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of surveillance principles, and the CDC NHSN System.

  • Ability to communicate technical information.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Business communication skills.
