Under indirect supervision, functions under PACU/Surgi Center Supervisor; maintains smooth and efficient transition of clients through Surgi Center department; directs activities developed to facilitate purpose of Surgi Center department; assures optimal quality of service to clients and their family members; controls essential process and educational supplies.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Facilitates admission to Surgi Center for pre-admission visit; documents arrival and other appropriate information in logbook per department procedure.
  • Coordinates and prioritizes activities to ensure pre-op nursing evaluation, education, and anesthesia assessment are done in timely manner.
  • Arranges appointment time according to guidelines established by Surgi Center.
  • Initiates appropriate chart documents and patient instruction sheets necessary to process patients in timely manner.
  • Assists in retrieval of diagnostic test results and disperses abnormal findings on timely basis to allow proper pre-operative evaluation of patients.
  • Initiates preparation of, and monitors following days H & P schedule.
  • Updates scheduling record; cancels and reschedules patients' appointments by telephone or correspondence; provides appropriate appointment information to insure patient comprehension.
  • Assists with completion of pre-op paperwork and assures that all appropriate documents are organized and dispersed for following days surgery.
  • Facilitates admission to Surgi Center for pre-op prep; notifies admission nurse of patients arrival.
  • Ensures charts, schedules and diagnostic test results are retrieved as required to verify compliance to pre-operative guidelines.
  • Initiates and prepares records with appropriate documentation forms necessary to process patients.
  • Coordinates and assists with patient admission and processing as needed to expedite entry to OR Suite.
  • Coordinates activities with Surgi Center staff; assists patients and family members with questions and/or directions.
  • Collaborates with staff to review, monitor and update present and future OR schedule changes; notifies appropriate staff and patients as needed.
  • Receives, screens, prioritizes, and relays incoming telephone calls and takes accurate messages and notifies receiver; responds to needs of callers.
  • Maintains confidentiality (verbal and written) of any and all patient and hospital related information.
  • Maintains inventory of all office supplies to assure they are adequately stocked and ordered on timely basis.
  • Files and maintains records, charts and surgical packets as required to ensure proper processing of patient.
  • Operates all standard office equipment, including computer system, copier, typewriter, intercom and phone system; coordinates and prioritizes telephone system with intercom system.
  • Initiates, gathers, computes, compiles, and records data and information for routine, special, statistical, legal or budget reports and studies.
  • Alerts Supervisor of progress and problems of Surgi Center by verbal and written report as needed or requested.
  • Monitors activities and work flow; expresses ideas for change to increase overall efficiency and qualify of service/care delivered by Surgi Center and organization; maintains appropriate amount of visitors in waiting room; controls congestion by re-directing people to outside waiting spaces.
  • Participates in department Quality Improvement Program.
  • Participates in orientation of new employees; ensures employees understanding of policies, procedures and general operations.
  • Informs patients and family members of pre-admit, pre-operative and post-operative processes as required.
  • Understands purpose and system flow of peri-operative setting; explains to patients and support person in understandable and effective manner.
  • Reinforces and/or clarifies physicians and nurses instructions at patient or family members level of comprehension.
  • Facilitates physician orders as directed by nursing staff.
  • Acts as patient advocate by receiving and handling complaints; makes appropriate referrals as needed.
  • Records patient information as required by Hospital and Department policy; documents legibly and accurately on requisitions, data collection forms, and medical records.
  • Initiates educational process by organizing audio/visual equipment; provides pamphlets and directs patients to appropriate classroom/office.
  • Functions with awareness of and applies safety principles/standards as defined by Hospital; including patient, environment and employee issues.
  • Reports incidents, work related injuries, unsafe equipment of environment to Supervisor or other appropriate person.
  • Completes annual Fire Safety, Infection Control and Disaster Programs.
  • Promotes effective team care through positive, personal conduct, organization and self-development.
  • Maintains and enhances skills via participation in educational offerings pertaining to job functions; attends required staff meeting.
  • Participates in planning, development and evaluation of unit programs, new procedures, practices and forms when asked.
  • Acts as resource person to other staff and engages in informal teaching as needed.
  • Seeks guidance, direction, or supervision when unsure of procedures/action needed.
  • Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide care and/or service appropriate to age groups served.
  • Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide culturally sensitive care and/or service.

  • Additional Requirements:
  • Type 40 wpm.
  • Knowledge of Surgi Center procedures helpful.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in oral communication, written communication, customer service, interpersonal relations, detail-oriented, interact with physicians, and handle multiple duties in fast-paced environment.
  • Talking to co-workers, customers, outside vendors, and on the telephone.
  • Reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
  • Training/giving and receiving instructions.
  • Mathematical ability, attention to detail (e.g. organization, prioritization, proofing), concentration, and alertness.
