The Director, Medical Staff Services Department (DMSS)  provides leadership, management & operational oversight of the Medical Staff Services Department (MSSD) and Medical Staff Organization (MSO) support services. The DMSS works collaboratively with the Chief of Staff, the Credentials Committee, Medical Executive Committee (MEC), and all other medical staff leaders (appointed, elected, volunteer, and paid, such as department chairs, committee chairs, etc.) to plan, organize, direct & coordinate the programs /activities of the MSO to ensure that the strategies of the MSO are supported and attained goals and plans are realized, and there is adherence to the requirements of regulatory and accreditation bodies that are relevant to the MSO.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Directs and manages the day to day operations of the Medical Staff Services Department  in all aspects for roles / responsibilities, including but not limited to credentialing and privileging of Advanced Practice Professionals (APP), MDs, DOs, DPMs, DCs, DDS/DMD, clinical psychologists.
  • Plans, formulates, and recommends for approval of the Medical Executive Committee and the Board of Trustee the policies, procedures, programs and other strategies which will further the objectives and requirements of the Medical Staff Organization (i.e., takes initiative in planning and formulating strategies and plans).
  • Coordinates and maintains Medical Staff Organization governance documents such as medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations, related documents (organization and functions manual, credentialing and privileging policies, etc.), and policies and procedures of the Medical Staff Organization. Assures that there is review of existing policies and governance documents, clinical privilege criteria (forms) on a regular basis and recommends changes to the Departments, Credentials Committee or Medical Executive Committee and Board of Trustees as appropriate.
  • Provides resources to Medical Staff Organization leaders to assist them in carrying out their responsibilities. Carries out specific tasks assigned by the Medical Staff Department Chiefs, Credentials Committee, Medical Executive Committee and/or the Chief of Staff.
  • Oversees the planning, implementation, execution, and evaluation of special projects as needed for the Medical Staff Organization.
  • Oversees and manages the budget for Medical Staff Services Department as directed by the CEO or other Hospital Leadership.
  • Provides consulting services regarding regulatory, legal, accreditation standards to both internal and external customers.
  • Hire, train, counsel and supervises all medical staff services department personnel.
  • Interprets requirements and disseminates information to all involved parties to assure necessary compliance, compatibility and continuous quality improvement of the credentialing process.
  • Partners with appropriate groups or individuals, accrediting bodies and external consultants to develop and implement systems and processes that meet regulatory requirements.
  • Basic Qualifications:
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of comprehensive expertise and knowledge of the medical staff organization management, including regulatory and accreditation requirements, credentialing, privileging, peer review, etc.
  • Minimum of five-(5) years of management experience.
  • Education
  • Bachelor's degree required OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.
  •  License, Certification, Registration
  • Certification as a Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist (CPCS) or Certified Professional Medical Services Management (CPMSM) within three-(3) years of employment by National Association of Medical Staff Services.

  • Additional Requirements:
  • Excellent communication skills, critical thinking and analytical skills, ability to work strategically, and experience in database management.
  • Credentialing and Privileging Data Base experience.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft applications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in adaptability, interpersonal relationship, oral communication, change management, problem solving, conflict resolution, systems thinking, team building, decision making, lean processes, written communication, and outstanding customer service.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Certification by the National Association of Medical Staff Services (NAMSS); Certification as Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist (CPCS) / Certified Professional Medical Services Management (CPMSM).
  • Knowledge of Medical Staff Office Web (MSOW) Data Base preferred
