Well-Rounded Development

Learning at Kaiser Permanente not only shapes employees in their specialties — it also gives them the vital business skills that every team member employs to help deliver outstanding care. Kaiser Permanente's development programs, particularly the Well-Rounded Development initiative, are designed to provide employees with comprehensive learning experiences that go beyond their specific specialties. This approach ensures that every team member acquires essential business skills, which are crucial for delivering exceptional care.

One of the key components of this initiative is KP Rounding, a core practice within Kaiser Permanente’s Operational Excellence journey. KP Rounding involves purposeful conversations and observations that engage employees and drive insights. This practice is evidence-based and structured to ensure an optimal workplace that is safe for both employees and patients. Leaders use this process to engage directly with their teams, listen to feedback from members and patients, and focus on performance improvements.

KPLearn

KP Learn

KPLearn is Kaiser Permanente’s enterprise-wide learning management system. It’s a web-based application that allows employees, physicians, and contingent workers access to an online catalog of learning offerings, compliance courses, and course completion records.

KPLearn provides a variety of learning opportunities, including:

  1. Compliance Courses: Essential courses that ensure employees are up-to-date with the latest regulations and standards.
  2. Professional Development: Courses designed to enhance skills in areas such as leadership, communication, and project management.
  3. Technical Training: Training on new technologies and systems to keep employees proficient and knowledgeable.
  4. Clinical Education: Specialized courses for healthcare professionals to improve patient care and stay current with medical advancements.
  5. Soft Skills Training: Courses that focus on improving interpersonal skills, teamwork, and customer service.

Tuition Reimbursement

We believe learning is a lifelong journey, and one way we support our employees on this journey is through tuition reimbursement programs. Here are some key details:

  • Eligibility: Regular full-time and part-time employees, scheduled to work 20+ hours per week, and in active status for 90+ days prior to the course start date are eligible.
  • Covered Expenses: The program covers the cost of tuition, any fees associated with the course, and required textbooks. It does not cover transportation, parking, periodicals, equipment, or other expenses not directly associated with tuition.

Represented employees should refer to the appropriate collective bargaining agreement.

Mentorship Program

Informal mentoring takes place daily across our organization. But for employees who want to engage in more formal learning and teaching, we have a program that connects mentors and mentees, establishing powerful connections and enabling us to raise the bar for ourselves and others so that together, we can reach our highest potential.

The Enterprise Mentoring Program at Kaiser Permanente is a structured initiative that accelerates professional development and career growth through meaningful relationships.

Here’s how the program works:

  • Create a Mentoring Plan: Your mentoring plan should be a subset of your individual development plan. It includes your development goals and areas of focus as suggested by your manager or peers. Leveraging performance assessments and development goals planning guides can help in creating this plan.
  • Connect with a Mentor or Mentoring Group: Once your plan is in place, you can connect with a mentor or join a mentoring group. This connection is crucial for gaining insights and guidance from more experienced colleagues.
  • Work Your Plan: Actively engage in the mentoring relationship by working on the goals and objectives outlined in your mentoring plan. This involves regular check-ins and progress updates.
Share Your Gains: After benefiting from the mentoring relationship, share your experiences and what you’ve learned on the company blog. Publicly thank and endorse your mentor on platforms like LinkedIn or Workplace.
