Medical Assistant I
Under close supervision, assists nurses and doctors in carrying out nursing functions and general duties such as maintaining examining rooms and work areas, obtaining and recording medical information and records, directing and transporting patients, assisting with examinations and tests, and other related duties following specific policies, routines, practices and procedures.
- Upholds Kaiser Permanentes Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws. Taking temperature, pulse and respiration readings by following standard procedures and recording necessary information in patient chart, obtain and record blood pressure readings involving close observation with knowledge of patient symptoms and treatment. Observes and records patients symptoms such as coloring and treatment reactions, bruises and rashes; reports unusual patient conditions to appropriate medical personnel. Set up and prepare examining rooms for doctors use by maintaining supplies and cleanliness of the area, arranging furniture and equipment, and other related items, re-organize and clean up examination rooms after each patient by washing and sterilizing previously used instruments and removing soiled linen or paper table covers. Assist doctors or registered nurses with various examinations by positioning and draping patients, passing instruments, chaperoning female examinations and standing by for routine assignments. Check patients chart folders to ensure information is complete on test results and reports for laboratory tests and x-rays, obtain missing information by calling the appropriate departments. Deliver specimens and related items to and from laboratory and other departments. Answer telephone and relay routine messages to staff personnel, transfer more difficult calls to registered nurse. Complete routine medical information forms by interview with patient, may perform routine pasting and filing functions in EKG department. May conduct a variety of urine tests using items such as reactive papers, dyes and staining material as required, recording change in color of patient specimens as appropriate. Apply sterile dressings, bandages, binders, and restraints often positioning patient following specific direction and standard procedure. May assist with procedures such as cystoscopy, minor surgeries, lumbar punctures, bone marrow punctures, paracentesis, thoracentesis, etc. May make up linen packs, surgical packs, tracheotomy trays, sponges, etc., under direction. Perform other duties as directed such as transport patients in wheelchairs and mobile beds. Promotes, ensures, and improves customer service to internal/external customers by demonstrating skills which are consistent with the organizations philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations and quality service Age Related Competencies: Skills assessments and validations are utilized to ensure that employees providing patient care to specific age groups (i.e. infants, adolescents, elderly, etc.) are proficient identifying the special needs and behaviors associated with a particular patient population.
