Job Summary:

Participates in the empowerment of library patrons by maintaining up-to-date knowledge of new developments and trends in library information systems and resources and collaborating across organizations to develop information literacy strategies, initiatives, and trainings. Conducts authoritative literature searches using advanced information databases and grey literature, as requested by patrons or for projects. Contributes to the fulfillment and delivery of library information resources by coordinating with key stakeholders on the delivery of resources for projects and committee work. Manages the fostering of resource acquisition and evaluation as part of overall resource management by maintaining advanced knowledge of best practices and emerging trends in library information systems and procuring resources. Partakes in a variety of professional activities related to Library Services by participating in, remaining up-to-date in, and teaching library science and health related professional development activities. Contributes to overall library operations through driving the application of strategies, which includes budget allocations, communications, and assisting with policies. Manages the development and promotion of library resources while representing the library for visibility by developing new library promotion strategies and materials.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Conducts or oversees business-specific projects by applying deep expertise in subject area; promotes adherence to all procedures and policies. Develops work plans to meet business priorities and deadlines; coordinates and delegates resources to accomplish organizational goals.   • Participates in the empowerment of patrons by: prepping parts of manuscript for publication and may co-publish; maintaining up-to-date knowledge of new developments and trends in library information system management, clinical research, and education to better support library patrons and develop education strategies, and intranet resources and unpublished (grey) literature sources, and developing national and global training resources or helping other librarian to develop such trainings; proactively troubleshooting advanced issues with library information systems and issues with vendors to work with them to fix issues; setting bibliographic and reference best practices and procedures, including citation formatting and leveraging citation manager, reference list curation, or related problems, and sharing expertise with others; providing consultation with individual patrons or with project teams as well as for grant-related work on developing information retrieval strategies to conduct and co-author research (e.g., systematic reviews, guidelines, and other publications); and collaborating across organizations to develop information literacy strategies, initiatives, and trainings for library patrons and librarians.

  • Supporting literature reviews for patrons by: conducting authoritative literature searches using advanced information databases and grey literature, as requested by patrons or projects, and may serve as a consultant to other members of the team; evaluating, synthesizing, and delivering relevant information identified through research to optimize resources for the end patron; utilizing tailored literature alerts to alert users of new articles on specific topics and advising on tools and mechanisms; and joining a team as an embedded member to support literature searches as a consultant.

  • Contributes to ensuring resource requests are fulfilled by: coordinating with key stakeholders on the delivery of resources for projects and committee work; maintaining and updating physical and electronic holdings in national lending databases and library catalog; and maintaining relationships with other libraries to ensure the free flow of information, and developing the operating procedures and policies to ensure regulations related to interlibrary loans and fair use are followed.

  • Manages the fostering of resource acquisition and evaluation by: maintaining advanced knowledge of best practices and emerging trends in library information systems, information literacy, health information resources, copyright, medical education, and the role of technology; ensuring the current resource offerings are evidence-based using data, contemporary and in support of Kaisers mission, and ongoing initiatives and research, and reviewing Kaisers services across the company and filling gaps; managing archival journals and other collections and check out of materials; maintaining the online catalog, the order of records/receipts and other library system to ensure proper system administration and troubleshooting errors; directing efforts to ensure current curation collections, contemporary to ensure they are still current and filling gaps with electronic resources and removal of outdated resources; and procuring and implementing software, hardware, and databases.

  • Partakes in a variety of professional activities related to Library Services by: participating in to remain up to date and teaches library science and health related professional development activities; leading solutions to complex problems while serving on internal committees, projects, peer groups, and professional organizations; and attending or presenting at external conferences, committees at the local, state, and national level, and publishing in journals.

  • Contributing to library operations by: driving the application of strategies to ensure supplies, forms, educational resources, and library equipment are operational; working within allocated budget by monitoring usage and ensuring proper use of expenditures, including negotiating with vendors for pricing; preparing internal communications to leaders regarding contributions to Kaiser initiatives; and assisting with policies and copyright compliance, licensing, accreditation, and regulatory standards.

  • Manages the development and promotion of library resources by: developing new library promotion strategies and materials of resources, such as new handouts, websites, including library guides, the intranet, displays, or campaigns; and representing the library and organization virtually and/or in person, such as through projects, peer groups, internal committees, external conferences, and committees at the local, state, and national level to promote library visibility.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in a leadership role with or without direct reports.

  • Minimum of six (6) years of experience using PubMed or related databases.

  • Minimum six (6) years of experience conducting grey literature searches.

  • Masters degree in Library or Information Science, Information System, or related field AND minimum six (6) years of experience in medical, health science, academic library, or a directly related field OR Minimum eleven (11) years of professional experience in medical, academic or special library or a directly related field.
