Chair, Biomedical Science- SOM
- Lead the Biomedical Science faculty in their roles as educators, scholars, and key contributors to all aspects of the KPSOM mission.
- Partner with the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and the Office of Medical Education to continuously improve and integrate Biomedical Science into the medical school curriculum.
- Collaborate with the departments of Clinical Science and Health Systems Science on the inclusion of appropriate Biomedical Science education in all phases of the KPSOM curriculum.
- Collaborate with faculty in the Clinical Science and Health Systems Science departments to develop and continually improve the integrated, case-based curriculum, inclusive of integrating feedback from curricular reviews and accrediting bodies.
- Ensure that departmental activities are consistent and supportive of the mission and adhere to all policies of the school.
- In collaboration with the Office of Medical Education, monitor the quality of teaching and learning using standardized metrics to ensure that best practices in medical education are applied by faculty.
- Support mentorship of student research and scholarship.
- Lead educational innovation and promote creativity and excellence in all departmental activities.
- Provide leadership for faculty development related to medical education, in collaboration with the Office of Medical Education.
- Mentor faculty members in the department to advance their individual scholarship efforts and career progression in medical education and other interdisciplinary research, in collaboration with the Office of Medical Education, Office of Faculty Affairs, and the Office of Research and Scholarship.
- Encourage and demonstrate cooperation, collaboration, inclusion, and teamwork as core values of the department.
- Foster interprofessional and cross-organizational collaboration and respect for all disciplines and roles among faculty and staff.
- Demonstrate leadership by example in service to the program and community.
- Collaborate with KPSOM leadership to create and implement a culture of innovation, inclusion, well-being, and commitment to educational excellence.
- Serve on relevant KPSOM committees and perform other duties as assigned.
- Supervise and support a team of direct and indirect reports, providing leadership, coaching, and performance management to ensure alignment with institutional goals. Oversee all aspects of team development, including recruitment, onboarding, training, performance evaluations, and professional growth. Ensure compliance with HR policies and procedures, and foster a positive, inclusive, and high-performing work environment.
- May serve as the Program Director of the MD/PhD dual-degree offering jointly with the California Institute of Technology. Recruit applicants, matriculate students, and lead the structured experience in collaboration with the offices of Admissions, Student Affairs, and Research and Scholarship. Optional, pending the applicants experience and interest. If the Chair does not serve as the Program Director, then they will oversee MD/PhD program in collaboration with the Program Director.
- Minimum ten (10) years of demonstrated experience in biomedical science as an educator and/or researcher/scholar with a record of scholarship in biomedical science (any field) and/or medical education.
- Minimum eight (8) years of experience in medical education, with experience in undergraduate medical education.
- PhD, MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree.

- Outstanding interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
- Outstanding teaching skills.
- Experience with curriculum design, development, evaluation, assessment, and curriculum mapping.
- Experience in the principles of learning and instructional design, adult learning theory, educational research, development of competency-based education, and knowledge of assessment of student learning (skills, knowledge, and attitudes).
- Extensive experience planning and delivering medical education.
- Experience with student-centered pedagogies (e.g., flipped classrooms, small-group interactive learning, problem and case-based learning environments) and use of educational technology.
- Experience with a variety of assessment (of student learning) modalities (e.g., single best answer multiple choice, open response and oral examinations, simulation).
- Experience with faculty and staff recruitment, development, and retention.
- Understanding of the current state of medical education and appreciation of the need for evolution to meet the needs of todays patients, students, faculty and future physicians/providers.
- Vision for transforming medical education using innovative curricula, technologies (inclusive of artificial intelligence tools), and teaching/learning methodologies.
- An entrepreneurial and proactive spirit; comfortable in an emerging medical school environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students one-on-one or in interdisciplinary teams.
Commitment to promoting a culture that respects and advances inclusive excellence.
- A record of nationally recognized achievement in research, clinical, educational, and/or public health pursuits commensurate with the rank of associate professor level or full professor.
