Department Details:
MARS (Membership Administration Reporting Shared Service) supports Kaiser Permanente-s Membership Administration lines of business-Commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, and Individual-by delivering standardized reports and dashboards projects across the membership lifecycle. The team provides governed membership data that enables operational teams and leadership to track enrollment and eligibility, meet regulatory requirements, and support day-to-day operations and strategic planning.
Internship Projects:
Membership Open Enrollment Reporting Project
Project Overview:
The intern will support the MARS team by helping build a basic ETL workflow using Alteryx or SQL Server and build a reporting dashboard with Tableau or Power BI that tracks membership enrollment and disenrollment trends for one line of business (e.g., Commercial or Medicare).
What the Intern Would Do:
1. Assist in building or updating an ETL process (using SQL or Alteryx) to pull enrollment and eligibility data from source tables
2. Help clean and validate data by checking record counts, date ranges, and basic trends
3. Support the creation of a Power BI or Tableau dashboard showing monthly enrollment changes, net growth, and simple breakdowns (region, product, or member type)
4. Document data definitions and assumptions used in the report
5. Prepare a short presentation summarizing the dashboard, key trends observed, and lessons learned in a lesson learned
What the Intern Learns:
1. How raw membership data becomes a trusted report
2. Basics of ETL, data validation, and reporting workflows
3. How analytics supports real operational teams
4. How to explain data clearly to a non-technical audience
End-of-Summer Deliverable:
A production-ready or near-production dashboard, supporting documentation, and a final presentation to the MARS team.

Computer Science; Business Administration; Math/Statistics; Finance & Accounting; Healthcare Administration; Data Science
Target Skillset:
1. Basic data skills (SQL, Excel, or coursework in data analytics or statistics)
2. Interest in data and reporting and how dashboards help teams make sense of information
3. Familiarity with BI or visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, or similar - coursework or projects count)
4. Attention to detail and curiosity about why numbers change or don-t match
5. Ability to learn and ask good questions when requirements aren-t clear
6. Clear communication and comfort working with teammates and stakeholders
7. Basic presentation skills and willingness to explain work clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences

- Ability to learn quickly and experience producing high quality work in short periods of time.
