Director of Engagement Operations - SOM
The Director of Engagement Operations at the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine (KPSOM) leads the development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of functions or programs that enhance and expand the schools awareness and impact through engagement and government relations activities, including community engagement projects and initiatives.
The Director oversees the day-to-day operations of the Office of Community Engagement and Government Affairs, ensuring efficient and effective administrative, financial, and operational support (including administrative operations of engaged research projects). As a member of the offices leadership team, the Director contributes to strategic planning, decision-making, and the overall direction of engagement and government relations efforts.
- Oversee engagement and strategic relationships with internal collaborators, including KPSOM students, faculty, staff.
- Manage relationships established with external partners, including Kaiser Permanente (KP), community leaders and organizations, and government agencies.
- Promote and maintain program initiatives, collaborative relationships between external partners and members of the school community that support shared values, vision, and goals.
- Work closely with partners to direct the coordination of meetings, workshops, conferences, events, and outreach activities that advance the Offices mission and community impact.
- Lead collaborations across departments and offices to ensure alignment of community engagement priorities and coordination across the school.
- Oversee, monitor, gather, and evaluate information on matters of current and proposed activities and initiatives that may impact the mission of the school and its faculty, staff and students.
- Provide strategic leadership and operational oversight of the day-to-day activities for the Office.
- Execute the strategic planning initiatives that align the Offices priorities with KPSOM.
- Establish clear objectives, timelines, deliverables, and accountability measures.
- Apply project management tools and methodologies to guide initiatives from conceptual planning through execution, evaluation, and reporting.
- Lead the development of operational systems, such as event management tools, communication plans, resource libraries, report protocols, partner databases and mappings, evaluation protocols, and research project administrative
- Oversee the development of Office workplans and workflows.
- Directly manage and supervise exempt and non exempt staff, ensuring effective recruitment, onboarding, coaching, performance management in accordance with organizational policies and applicable regulations.
- Provides fiscal oversight through monthly budget monitoring, reviewing financial performance and expense trends, identifying variances to ensure alignment with operational goals; partners with budget owners to address risks and improve cost efficiency.
- Ensure the efficient operation of the departments administrative support, community engagement, and research projects. Identify opportunities for continuous quality improvement by analyzing data, measuring outcomes, and tracking performance indicators.
- Implement process improvements to enhance service delivery, efficiency, and overall impact.
- Oversee the selection, implementation, integration, and ongoing evaluation of technology platforms that support operations, communication, data tracking, and reporting.
- Ensure systems are effectively utilized to improve efficiency, support decision making, and meet reporting and compliance requirements.
- Minimum six (6) years progressive leadership experience in experience in academic, nonprofit, or community-focused settings.
- Minimum three (3) years of experience in leadership role with direct reports.
- Minimum three (3) years of experience managing operational or project budgets.
- Bachelors degree in a social, behavioral, or public health field, or Business Administration, Public Health Administration, or a related field.

- Experienced in strategic planning and fiscal management.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication.
- Masters degree in Public Health, Public Administration, Sociology, Marketing, Business, Communications, Community Relations, Political Science, Public Relations, or related field.
- Education or Formal Training in Organization Development, Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Business Administration or related field.
- Formal training or certification related to: Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Manager (CM), Lean Six Sigma PMP)
- Experience working collaboratively with students, faculty, senior leadership, and community partners.
- Demonstrated experience leading or supporting the administration of grant?funded programs, including managing the administrative operations of grant application submissions and funded program activities (compliance with requirements, reporting, and close-out).
- Proficiency with technology platforms and administrative systems used to support operations, communication, and reporting.
- Five (5) years of experience working in a matrixed organization.
- Five (5) years of experience building and managing relationships with stakeholders.
- Five (5) years of experience in community engagement.
