Job Summary:

Responsible for providing complex communications management, consultation, planning, implementation and recommended solutions for multiple Southern California Permanente Group (SCPMG) programs and projects (targeting both internal and external audiences) to meet organizational brand and reputation goals.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a strategic communications adviser to senior executives in support of entity-wide business goals and strategies, and as thought partner and influencer of national Permanente initiatives on behalf of the co-CEO.
  • Applies business knowledge and communications expertise to develop and lead communications strategies that advance enterprise-wide business objectives.
  • Drives communication programs and initiatives involving multiple business areas and targeting broad-based internal and external audiences.
  • Engages and coordinates across executive stakeholders and subject-matter experts to ensure strategic business objectives are supported through integrated communications programs that represent stakeholder perspectives and meet business needs.
  • Serves as liaison with other business units (e.g. Government Relations, Labor Relations, Legal, Compliance) to develop communications strategies and tactics that meet necessary regulations and requirements to effectively support the organizations reputation.
  • Marshals resources and creates materials to build communications awareness, understanding and credibility of national strategies and supports the ultimate goal of effectively delivering, promoting, and protecting SCPMG s brand and reputation.
  • Develops integrated (internal and external) communications plans for the functional area(s) including development of communications positioning, messaging, and tactics consistent with the SCPMG brand.
  • Conducts appropriate needs assessment and audience analysis to support effective development of communications programs and materials.
  • Following implementation of programs and initiatives, monitors the effectiveness of the communications program and materials to assure appropriate use of organizational resources. Modifies programs and projects as needed to improve results.
  • Oversees a staff that provides high-quality communications services: writing, editing, research, design, production, program management, etc. Ensures work is completed on time and on budget.
  • Assigns, tracks, and manages communications managers, consultants/specialists and other professionals as needed to support the development and implementation of strategic communications plans, programs, and projects.
  • Serves as liaison with other business units (brand management, multimedia services, marketing communications etc.) to ensure consistent application of SCPMG brand standards, style guide, and other processes and procedures.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience
  • Minimum five (5) years in corporate communications
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in planning and implementing internal communications plans and programs in a large complex organization (or external communications planning and programs in a large complex organization).
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience working with senior executives and confidential and/or highly sensitive content.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience with stakeholder management and change management in a large organization.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in communications in the health care field at the national level in upper management.
Education
  • Bachelors degree in journalism, communications or related field (English, public relations, and/or business communications), OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

Additional Requirements:
  • Proven experience in all aspects of corporate communications, including leading communications efforts for complex, multidisciplinary issues and initiatives
  • Ability to direct team of communications professionals to deliver both internal and external communications programs and initiatives
  • Demonstrated record of leading successful brand and reputation management issues and initiatives
  • Crisis communications experience for a large, complex organization and industry
  • Ability to oversee writing and editing for the complete spectrum of communications tools-from strategic messages to speeches to press releases to long-form articles to video treatments (and beyond.
  • Keen understanding of the connection between government relations, community relations, and brand and reputation management
  • Solid understanding of community health initiatives
  • Marketing and advertising fluency
  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of substantial progressive experience, in a corporate environment with experience in a healthcare environment preferred
  • Masters degree preferred.
