Health Systems Science Research Faculty - School of Medicine
The Department of Health Systems Science (HSS) at the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine (KPSOM) seeks to build our research capacity in disciplines related to the clinical effectiveness and value of health care services. This role is responsible for developing a portfolio of external grant support that expands and complements the Departments currents program.
Faculty research at KPSOM uses diverse data sources, including but not limited to data derived from care delivery within and outside of KP, including the KP Research Bank and employing a variety of rigorous quantitative and/or qualitative and observational and/or experimental methods.
This role also collaborates with researchers and clinical and operational leaders to access Kaiser Permanente (KP) data sources, including KP Data Warehouses and the KP Research Bank, to support health system innovation and improvement.
The role supports the goal of HSS by expanding externally funded research that advances health, health care, and health equity through systems transformation and redesign. The role also contributes to student teaching and research mentorship.
- Expand a program of externally funded research in one or more of the core domains of clinical effectiveness and value, access to care, innovation in health care delivery and population health.
- Establish productive collaborations with current faculty members to expand externally funded research at KPSOM.
- Identify opportunities to partner with health system leaders to address health system priorities using diverse research methods and approaches.
- Engage in scholarly activities that may include clinical effectiveness research; health services and health systems research; improvement and implementation research; research related to personalized medicine including implementation of innovations using genomics and related data; use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and large data models in health care; and health-related program and policy development and evaluation.[LC2.1][MG2.2]
- Support and serve as a mentor to KPSOM students as they pursue both required and additional scholarly projects.
- Serve as presenters and facilitators in large, medium, and small group learning sessions.
- Scholarly and pedagogical duties, expectations, and resources will be individually developed based on evolving faculty interests, skills, departmental priorities, and needs.

- Demonstrated health-related research experience in clinical or health services research, including but not limited to: comparative effectiveness and outcomes research, delivery system/implementation science, artificial intelligence/machine learning, advanced analytics, personalized medicine (including use of genomics, proteomics and related data), clinical informatics, health economics, embedded research, health equity, health policy, improvement science, management science, public health, sociology, statistics, or systems engineering.
- Demonstrated ability or potential to obtain funding from diverse sources, including National Institutes of Health (NIH), Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), private foundations, and/or industry
- Confirmed track record of first and senior author publication in journals of clinical medicine, population health, and health care research
- Demonstrated outstanding teaching and mentoring abilities and commitment to teaching.
- Proven strong collaboration and communication skills.
- Demonstrated strong critical thinking, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Expertise in one or more clinical domains that would complement our current portfolio of research, including but not limited to expertise in cardiovascular disease, diabetes or surgical outcomes.
