Librarian Specialist III
Participates in the empowerment of library patrons by consulting and providing education on how to use specialized library information systems and resources and supporting information literacy initiatives through library patron training. Conducts authoritative literature searches using advanced information databases and grey literature, as requested by patrons. Contributes to the fulfillment and delivery of library information resources by preparing resource requests for pickup or electronic transfer as needed. Fosters resource acquisition and evaluation as part of overall resource management by maintaining knowledge of best practices in library information systems and evaluating resources. Partakes in a variety of professional activities related to Library Services by participating in library science and health related professional development activities internally and externally. Contributes to overall library operations, which includes budget allocations, communications, and assisting with policies as needed. Contributes to the development and promotion of library resources while representing the library for visibility, which includes performing event planning.

- Participates in the empowerment of patrons by: consulting on publishing to assist with identifying optimal journals, including tracking publications of individuals; educating and consulting with patrons on how to use specialized library information systems and resources, such as advanced online database searches and bibliographic and reference systems, and intranet resources and unpublished (grey) literature sources; troubleshooting advanced issues with library information systems and issues with patrons; advising on bibliographic and reference questions, including citation formatting, reference list curation, or related problems; providing consultation with individual patrons or project teams on developing basic information retrieval strategies to conduct research (e.g., systematic reviews, guidelines, and other publications) and seeks support from senior team member as needed; and supporting information literacy and evidence-based practice through library patron training.
- Supporting literature reviews for patrons by: conducting authoritative literature searches using advanced information databases and grey literature, as requested by patrons; evaluating, synthesizing, and delivering relevant information identified through research to optimize resources for the end patron; utilizing tailored literature alerts to alert users of new articles on specific topics and may advise on tools and mechanisms; and joining a team as an embedded member to support literature searches as a consultant.
- Contributes to ensuring resource requests are fulfilled by: preparing resource requests for pickup or electronic transfer as needed; maintaining and updating physical and electronic holdings in national lending databases and library catalog; and initiating interlibrary loans and lending requests and resolving issues from other libraries while following operating procedures and policies for inter-library loans and fair use for patron requested information resources media.
- Fosters resource acquisition and evaluation with guidance by: maintaining knowledge of best practices in library information systems, information literacy, health information resources, copyright, medical education, and the role of technology; ensuring the current resource offerings are evidence-based using data, contemporary and in support of Kaisers mission, and ongoing initiatives and research; managing archival journals and other collections and check out of materials; incorporating newly acquired resources into the online catalog and other library systems; updating current collections to ensure they are still current and filling gaps with electronic resources and removal of outdated resources; and evaluating software, hardware, and databases in order to recommend improvements and implementation options.
- Partakes in a variety of professional activities related to Library Services by: participating in library science and health related professional development activities; serving on internal committees and projects; and attending or presenting at external conferences, committees at the local, state, and national level, and/or publishing in journals.
- Contributing to library operations by: ensuring supplies, forms, educational resources, and library equipment are operational as needed; working within allocated budget by monitoring usage and ensuring proper use of expenditures; collaborating on internal communications by collecting data for the team to validate and present to leaders regarding contributions to Kaiser initiatives; and assisting with policies and copyright compliance, licensing, accreditation, and regulatory standards.
- Contributes to the development and promotion of library resources by: maintaining and developing informational handouts, websites including library guides, the intranet, and newsletters to promote current and upcoming resources, services, and performing event planning; and representing the library virtually and/or in person, such as through department meetings to promote visibility of relevant resources and services.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience using PubMed or related databases.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience conducting literature searches.
- Masters degree in Library or Information Science, or related field AND minimum two (2) years of experience in medical, health science, academic library, or a directly related field OR Minimum seven (7) years of professional experience in medical, academic or special library or a directly related field.
