Irrigation Specialist I
Under the supervision of the Maintenance Manager, provide irrigation systems and landscape maintenance, repair, modifications, troubleshooting and installation services for all Kaiser Permanente Properties within the NW Region. Perform skilled and semi-skilled duties as designated by the Manager. Maintain and ensure that grounds are free from safety hazards and work areas are neat in appearance at all times.
- Assess systems and worksite needs. Prioritize work on a daily basis. Keep all work areas clean and free from safety hazards.
- Perform irrigation system and landscape maintenance, repair, modification and upgrade services as summarized below: Preform system water audits to ensure effective and efficient operations. Perform system upgrades, adjustments and modifications. Remove and replace damaged or malfunctioning system components. Perform system diagnostics and repairs of all system components. Lead and direct staff to assist in system maintenance and repairs. Provides guidance and training to employees in system maintenance, operations, work techniques and methods. Prepare and maintain appropriate component and parts inventories. Prepare budget cost estimates for system upgrades, maintenance and repairs. Record, prepare and submit reports on irrigation activities. Schedule and perform system winterization and start up procedures. Operation of equipment used to perform diagnostics install, maintain, repair or modify systems.
- Review all irrigation and landscape construction plans. Communicate recommendations and provide professional and technical information and specifications to the manager, contractors and architects.
- Perform regular reviews of department design guide and update as needed.
- Direct involvement and overview of new system installation walk through process and participation in the identification of punch items.
- Research, install, program and operate computerized system components and central controls.
- Respond to emergency calls and perform system repairs as needed.
- Establish appropriate zone watering schedules and cycles and program all controllers accordingly.
- Respond to, trouble shoot and correct system problems and failures.
- Inspection, maintenance, repair and installation of backflow devices.
- Performs routine inspections of construction projects to ensure private contractors are meeting all industry standards for installation practices and procedures. Ensure contractors perform duties and complete all construction in accordance with established department guidelines.
- Performed other related irrigation and landscape duties as requested.
- Five (5) years of commercial irrigation system repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, installation and modification.

- Continuing education required, identified and scheduled by the Department Manager.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and industry standards applicable to irrigation and landscape construction, maintenance, repair, modification and troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of materials, parts, tools and equipment used for irrigation and landscape maintenance, troubleshooting and repair.
- Knowledge of safety policies, regulations and established procedures. Knowledge of watering requirements and programs for turf, trees and a variety of plants and ground cover.
- Watering requirements and programs for various types of soils.
- Hydraulic and low voltage electrical systems.
- Ability to interpret diagrams, plans and blueprints.
- Ability to effectively and efficiently troubleshooting and solve irrigation problems and failures.
- Ability to establish efficient, effective schedules and programs.
- Ability to modify, maintain, adjust and repair various systems.
- Skilled in the utilization of all appropriate tools and equipment needed to perform duties and assignments.
- Ability to plan and organize work and read equipment manuals.
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally orally and in writing.
- Seven (7) years commercial irrigation system repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, installation and modification.
- Backflow Prevention Device Certification.
- Valid Drivers License.
- Irrigation Association Membership.
- I.A. Water Audit Certification.
- Ability to interpret diagrams, plans and blueprints.
- Ability to effectively and efficiently trouble shoot and solve irrigation problems and failures.
- Ability to modify system to ensure consistent, uniform precipitation rates.
- Classes taken through the Irrigation Association and passed in the following seven (7) subjects; (1) Landscape Irrigation Design. (2) Field Hydraulics. (3) Controller Troubleshooting. (4) Electrical Troubleshooting 1 & 2. (5) Sprinkler System Programming and Scheduling. (6) Predicting and Estimating Landscape Water Use. (7) Advanced Head Layout. Watering requirements for various types of soils. Hydraulic and low voltage electrical system trouble shooting. Methods, materials and tools needed to install and maintain a variety of irrigation systems and landscape. Industry standards and regulations.
