Emergency Room Clerk
The Emergency Care Assistant assists in the delivery of patient care and provides related support functions through the performance of a variety of tasks. Basic Function: Under direct supervision performs a variety of clerical functions for Nursing Care Unit; provides reception for designated area; arranges for patient examination/testing as directed. Manually and using KPDS provides patient registration, order entry and discharge/transfer of emergency department registered patients. Supervision Received And Exercised: Works under the general direction of the Department Administrator of Emergency Medicine or Shift Supervisor.
- Completes patient records activities, breaks down chart and distributes copies appropriately.
- Checks charts for completeness; assembles charts, collating all required forms and diagnostic reports in legible manner.
- Initiates or updates and verifies various hospital reports such as on-call schedule for physicians.
- Provides telephone reception for Nursing Care Unit; gives information regarding patients condition following established directives.
- Sorts, distributes, files patient chats to appropriate areas and individuals.
- Supplements courier service by delivering requests, specimens, etc., to other hospital departments as necessary.
- Notifies departments appropriate for task (admission, repairs, dietary, orders, etc.) and completes requisition when appropriate.
- Maintains appropriate supply of patient care forms and clerical/reception supplies.
- Reviews Nursing master on KPDS to update and discharge patients each shift to ensure department Emergency Log is complete and accurate.
- Demonstrates awareness of current laws governing health care delivery and follows established protocols.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Registers patients presenting by ambulance, orders medical record and places ID band on patient.
- Empties pneumatic tube of incoming transactions and distributes appropriately.
- Sorts and distributes daily mail timely.
- One (1) year related experience in an acute care hospital setting as ward/department clerk or surgery scheduling clerk.
