Position Summary:
The professional pathology clerk follows all policies and procedures of the Pathology Dept to assure confidentiality,
legality and smooth functioning of the Pathology Dept on a daily basis. The pathology clerk is the first contact for
patients, providers and outside consultants.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assign pathology cases to staff pathologists using intricate template.
Accession cases into pathology computer database (anatomic pathology specimen tracking system with interface to KP mainframe)
Run pathology computer system reports and pull appropriate history cards.
Open department mail and distribute.
Answer department phones. Disseminate pathology diagnoses to providers inside and outside of Kaiser; take requests
for slides to be sent out, etc. Take calls from attorneys regarding subpoena, patients requesting outside consult and
clinicians regarding QA or special studies requiring slides pulled or reports printed.
Sign out completed pathology reports in computer database; print, copy, collate, distribute and mail all pathology reports and their attachments.
Process slide sendout requests for outside consultation; prepare slides/blocks for shipping and prepare necessary
paperwork to accompany material; use appropriate shipping method or courier. Record that material has been returned
to the dept.
Followup by telephone on request for consultation which appear to be delayed.
File all slides, blocks, reports and attachments.
Print finished reports for a month; after reports/attachments collated, arranged for book binding.
Ability to effectively communicate with medical staff and coworkers.
Perform other clerical related duties as necessary.

While performing the duties of this Job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit, bend at neck, repetitive use of
dominant hand (simple grasping and fine manipulation). The incumbent is occasionally required to stand, walk, bend at the waist, twist at neck and waist, reach above shoulder level. The incumbent will occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an incumbent encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Works in high volume pathology laboratory providing ongoing clerical support.
While performing the duties of this Job, the incumbent may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, sharps and biological hazards. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma/GED
English language skills at or above high school level
Related medical laboratory certificates, i.e. medical assistant, medical secretary, laboratory assistant, medical receptionist or medical transcriptionist preferred
Some educational background and/or experience in medical field necessary
Minimum intermediate medical terminology.
Knowledge of pathology computer system.
Working knowledge of word processing.
Working knowledge of Kaiser mainframe preferred.
Must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.
