Job Summary:

In addition to the responsibilities listed below, this position is also responsible for maintaining and monitoring perfusion equipment and resources in conjunction with Information Technology (IT) and Clinical Technology, including but not limited to all operating room (OR), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), ventricular assist device (VAD), and mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices; ensuring the perfusion equipment (e.g., heart-lung machine) cleaning and preventative maintenance is performed and documented; assisting with and monitoring the duties performed by the Perfusion Team; assisting with perfusions and other staff annual reviews and trainings; actively pursuing opportunities for cost savings and providing input on capital request needs of the perfusion service; assisting and preparing staff work schedules including standby coverage; executing continuous quality improvement initiatives; educating and maintaining necessary staff documentation, clinical competency, and ongoing product and practice in-services related to clinical advancement of the perfusion department; maintaining organizational support to the department with regards to staffing needs, meeting agenda and topics, departmental huddles, student liaison processes, daily functions, and department operations; and supporting operating room (OR) and cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU) operations by developing pars, ordering supplies, and providing a reliable and steady account of consumables used by the perfusion department.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Contributes to clinical administration and improvement by: driving efficient and effective coordination with Medical Facility staff to schedule appointments with patients and provide access to the clinic or procedure area; collaborating with team to implement quality assurance measures for treatment, such as the area of expertise as per department protocol, practices and policies; and seeking out opportunities to leverage new or changing techniques in specialty areas and encouraging others to stay informed of new products and protocols through membership in professional societies and/or attending professional seminars.

  • Prepares patients for testing or treatment procedures by: training others to explain testing or treatment procedures to patient in order to improve their experience during the process and increase cooperation; leveraging knowledge to answer patient questions regarding steps of and rationale behind the procedure and providing resources; identifying the best method for positioning the patient in area for testing or treatment of patient, ensuring safety of testing area, and ensuring availability of positioning devices for patients; and coordinating testing or treatment equipment (e.g., recording electrodes) for patient procedures.

  • Manages medical equipment by: monitoring, operating, and adjusting medical equipment specific to the areas of specialty (e.g., diagnostic, therapeutic).

  • Handles patient medical information and records by: documenting and reporting findings from patients medical history and chart, including providing analysis to surgeon or physician; leveraging technical expertise to assist development of efficient management of patients related to area of expertise as per department protocol, practices and policies a computer database; and collecting and maintaining documentation of the clinical conditions of patient to ensure results of testing and treatment are captured related to area of expertise as per department protocol, practices and policies.

  • Assisting physicians with treatments and diagnostics by: operating equipment and providing supplies for physician, as well as maintain a clean and sterile area as appropriate; and monitoring the accuracy and reliability patient readings that deviate from normal or standard readings.

  • Performs testing and monitoring of patients and equipment by: testing, analyzing, adjusting, and monitoring patients and providing feedback to care team based on recommendations according to treatment plan and area of specialty.

  • Provides direct patient care by: interpreting and reporting operating specific equipment related to area of expertise; preparing patients for procedures and all machinery related to equipment in area of expertise and adjusting all monitors and parameters for patient safety; and independently performing procedures using medical equipment specific to the areas of specialty (e.g., electroencephalogram [EEG], diagnostic, therapeutic) and other procedures as ordered by physicians.
Minimum Qualifications:


  • Graduate from a Perfusion program.

  • Minimum four (4) years of experience as a Perfusionist.

  • Bachelors degree in a science or health-related discipline or a related field AND minimum four (4) years of experience in field of specialty OR Minimum seven (7) years of experience in field of specialty.



  • Basic Life Support required at hire
  • Clinical Perfusionist Certificate required at hire
