Senior Laboratory Assistant
Under the direction and oversight of the Laboratory Director and Laboratory manager, or designee, within the scope of Unlicensed laboratory personnel as described in B&PC 1269, frequently performs most complex procedures defined for laboratory assistant in a Medical Center or in a Regional Laboratory Department. Complex procedures, as applicable, includes plating and processing microbiology specimens and assisting in operating and maintaining automated and semi-automated test equipment under the direct and constant supervision of a licensed person as authorized by the California lab law. Other complex procedures may include problem solving, e.g., reviewing computer error lists and resolving clerical discrepancies. May be required to draw blood. Regularly direct, check, assign and coordinate the work of three (3) or more other Laboratory Assistants.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Be specifically assigned by the Employer to direct, check, assign and coordinate the work of three (3) or more other Laboratory Assistants.
- Trains and reports on the work performance of other Laboratory Assistants.
- Must be fully proficient in all Laboratory Assistant duties in a medical center or in a Regional Laboratory Department, including the complex procedures defined for a Laboratory Assistant III.
- Draws blood from patients finger, heel, or vein, observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood samples. Obtains the correct amount and type of specimen.
- Documents all requests and released results of lab work accurately.
- Informs physicians of released lab results.
- Completes appropriate routing, handling, and processing of various medical specimens.
- Orders, distributes and stocks supplies as needed.
- May be required to register patients
- Perform other related duties as necessary.
- Supervisory Responsibilities: This position motivates and provides work direction to other employees, but does not have the authority to hire, fire or discipline.
Grade 470
- Minimum One (1) year experience as a Laboratory Assistant required. Fully proficient in all Laboratory Assistant duties in a medical Center or in a Regional Laboratory Department, including complex procedures defined for a Laboratory Assistant III. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment. Also refer to Position Specifications outlined in the appropriate collective bargaining agreement.
- High School Diploma/GED. California Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT), where applicable.
