Job Summary:

Under direct supervision of a therapist, the Rehab Aide will assist the Physical or Occupational Therapist by providing non-patient related tasks as well as patient related tasks functioning in accordance with external regulations and organizational policy.

Essential Responsibilities:


  • Upholds Kaiser Permanentes Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities, and applicable state, federal and local laws.

  • Transports patients to required locations observing established procedures and safety precautions.

  • Performs clerical functions such as posting treatment given, completing CPRs, filing progress sheets, maintaining statistics, ordering supplies, making copies of files/exercise programs etc.

    • Observes all regional, medical center and department policies and procedures:


      • Adhere to all department standards of attendance and dress.

      • Maintain privacy and confidentiality of medical information.

      • Observe universal precautions and all infection control safety policies.

        • Maintain standards of professional behavior established to enhance quality of service:


          • Use appropriate titles and greetings for patients, families, physicians, and staff.

          • Treat all patients in accordance with Patient Bill of Rights.

            • Communicate clearly, effectively and appropriately at all times:


              • Written communication must be clear, concise, legible, timely, accurate, and complete at all times.


              • Maintain a courteous professional relationship with patients, families, other members of the department, and health care team.

                • Maintain equipment, supplies, and work area in accordance with department guidelines:


                  • Follow all department guidelines related to equipment safety and maintenance.

                  • Assists in maintaining clean and safe work areas.


                  • Demonstrates competence in providing patient care tasks as instructed and delegated by the physical or occupational therapist.

                    • Patient Related Tasks:


                      • Provide second person assist for PT/OT in IP and OP settings for patients needing additional assistance due to any of the following issues (obesity, fall risk, severe de-conditioning or weakness, multiple lines, Oxygen, etc).

                      • Provide second person assist with large group treatment sessions.

                      • Assist with screening clinics for PTs (greet patients, lead back to treatment room, distribute questionnaire.

                      • Translation for non -English speaking patients if certified.

                        • As Part of Group Therapy:


                          • Sets up hot and cold packs.

                          • Removes hot and cold packs.

                          • Assists patient in getting out of traction.

                          • Fills whirlpool with water (any additives will be placed by licensed staff).

                          • Removal of dressings to be followed by PT assessment and treatment.

                          • Remove electrodes following electrical stimulation treatment such as interferrential, and  iontophoresis.

                          • Transport patients to and from Physical Therapy from patient care areas.


                          • Demonstrates competence in providing non-patient care tasks as instructed and delegated by the physical or occupational therapist.
                          • Nonpatient Related Tasks:

                          • Assist with ordering supplies.

                          • Assist with ordering and re-stocking linen.

                          • Assist with cleaning treatment booths (wiping down mats, disposing of dirty linen).

                          • Assist with maintaining a clean environment of care including maintaining log-books for all equipment/temperatures etc.

                          • Xeroxing/copying charts for W/C / OHS departments.

                          • Cleaning out file drawers (clearing out old charts ready for D/C).

                          • Washing toys used in Pediatric clinic.

                          • Assist with inpatient administrative duties (making patient identifying tags for assignment board).

                          • Copying, collating exercise / patient education materials and / or documentation forms.

                          • Wiping down gym equipment.

                          • Making appointments as needed.

                          • Reminder calls to next day patients as needed.

                          • Monthly cleaning of hot pack (hydrocollator) tank.

                          • Monthly cleaning of parafin bath units.

                          • Cleaning of traction unit attachments.

                          • Cleaning of hot and cold pack covers.

                          • Cleaning outside of the hydrocollator tanks and ice pack machine.

                          • Retrieve supplies for patients who are working with a therapist in either the inpatient or outpatient settings.

                          • Ordering food (dietary supplies) for swallowing patients.

                          • Assist with screening clinics for PTs (greet patients, lead back to treatment room, distribute questionnaire.

                          • Assisting with sorting and mailing off copies of completed evaluations to referring providers.

                          • Replacing patient supplies such as cervical pillows and splints when patient is aware of sizes and no additional treatment or assessment is required.

                          • Pulling referrals and/or retrieving referrals from electronic systems.

                          • Collecting and maintaining departmental stats.

                          • Assisting with referral and certification tracking.


                          • Demonstrates an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological maturation process in delivery of services to patients of the age group served - pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric.
                          • Document clinical activities in a timely, comprehensive, and accurate manner following department policies and procedures.
                          Basic Qualifications:
                          Experience
                          • 0-2 years of work experience in hospital or OP setting.
                          Education
                          • High School Graduate or General Education Development (GED) required.
                          License, Certification, Registration
                          • Basic Life Support
                             
                          Additional Requirements:
                          • Understanding/Competence in basic safety and infection control procedures i.e. proper body mechanics, universal precautions.
                          • Completion of Pre-employment and annual physicals.
                          • Completion of annual skills competency assessment.
                          Preferred Qualifications:
                          • One (1) - two (2) years of work experience in a rehab setting.
                          • Prior experience working in a physical therapy department.
                          • A hiring manager may specify Preferred Qualifications, which are desirable and above and beyond the requirements specified in the Minimum Qualifications section above.

                          • Schedule may change based on operational need.
                          • Locations can include SDMC, SMMC/SAM, Zion. 
                          • 8 hour shifts. Up to 4 hospital weekend shifts/month.
