Laboratory Assistant II
A Laboratory Assistant II is responsible for the proper processing of Clinical Microbiology specimens under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor, Assistant Supervisor, Medical Technologist II, Medical Technologist/Technician and/or Lead Lab Assistant. He/she is expected to be proficient in the use of the laboratory information system (CERNER) and KPHC, to manage test packing lists (i.e., filing, distributing, faxing) and to maintain supplies associated with laboratory functions. Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills, team work, professionalism, good judgment and organizational skills. Works independently as the only laboratory staff onsite in Microbiology.
- Processing Clinical Microbiology laboratory specimens: Follow department policies/procedures for Clinical Microbiology specimen processing, including Standard Precautions. Receives and processes all Microbiology specimens delivered to the laboratory. Maintain a professional demeanor/appearance per regional policy.Protect PHI per HIPAA, including shred or properly dispose of all unused labels. Keep work area clean/stocked with in date supplies, complete checklist.
- Working independently: Ensures proper packing and disposal of Biohazard Waste. Equipment maintenance (eyewash and BSC11). Ensures all Microbiology transport bags are correctly cycled for courier pick up to the facility labs.
- Deliver great customer service: Establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers. Prioritize work to meet the Microbiology department needs. Consistently displays good communication skills.
- Be informed/provide information: Complete all mandatory training, policy/procedure review and competency requirements. Participate in internal DHR inspections, being prepared to answer inspectors questions. Responsible for reading and complying with information communicated in weekly laboratory newsletters. Document quality issues and communicate to supervisor.
- Two (2) years of experience in Microbiology specimen processing.
- High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

- Must demonstrate good customer service skills.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Must have a history of punctuality.
- Must have a history of good attendance.
- One (1) year of customer service experience.
- Completion of a Microbiology Specimen processing training program.
