Obstetrical Technician
Under direct supervision, performs variety of duties to assist nursing and surgical team with obstetric procedural cases in manner consistent with quality patient care and operative technique; maintains aseptic technique as appropriate for requested task; prepares surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies; performs scrub duties for variety of obstetric operative procedures.
- Takes and records vital signs in patient chart (e.g., temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight).
- Assists in collection, labeling and proper disposal of specimens as directed by standard procedure.
- Assists with patient transport and positioning as directed.
- Provides and removes bedpans; measures and records output as directed.
- Provides perineal care (e.g. cleaning) as directed.
- Tests collected urine specimens for sugar, ketones and albumin.
- Assists with labeling and transport of drawn lab work and collected specimens per established protocol.
- Prepares self and immediate area for surgical procedure; ensures cleanliness and orderliness of the operating room area.
- Inspects equipment and supplies prior to use to ensure availability and readiness, according to surgeons preference.
- Performs surgical preps as indicated per protocol for specific procedure.
- Assists with medication identification and labeling at sterile field under oversight of nurse.
- Observes and reports use of instruments, sponges, and needles on operative field to surgeon or surgical team; inventories other supplies and instruments throughout surgery; verifies correctness of supply and needle count prior to closure of procedure; documents count on operative record.
- Assists surgeon by performing variety of tasks (e.g., draping patients, holding retractors, passing instruments, applying surgical dressings, suctioning and sponging surgical wounds, holding extremities, moving patients) as directed.
- Observes and reports surgical fluids (e.g., blood loss and irrigation used); anticipates surgeon requests relative to patient care needs.
- Observes aseptic technique of surgical team members at field; corrects and reports breaks in sterile technique immediately to the surgeon and/or surgical team; isolates and controls location of contaminated instruments and supplies.
- Counts instruments, needles and sponges with registered nurse according to procedure.
- Decontaminates equipment, instruments and supplies as necessary; assists in cleaning rooms, furniture and equipment according to established procedures.
- Reports and removes faulty equipment from service.
- Assists in orientation of new obstetrical technicians as requested.
- Respects patients rights to privacy, dignity and safety.
- Adheres to departmental safety policies regarding lasers, electrical, x-ray, power equipment and general safety.
- Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide care and/or service appropriate to age groups served.
- Demonstrates sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of specialization.
- Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide culturally sensitive care and/or service.
- Performs other duties and accepts responsibility as assigned.
- Non-Essential Functions:
- Adjusts to changes in procedures including instrumentation and supplies; restocks room and/or area with necessary equipment and supplies.
- Conserves supplies and equipment.
- Applies external fetal monitor when asked.
- Makes chart packs.
- Adjusts to changes in assignments, workloads and stressful situations.

- Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology training program; or equivalent combination of education (lesser) & experience may be considered in lieu of requirements.
- CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers OR Basic Life Support
- Talking to co-workers, customers, outside vendors, and on the telephone.
- Reading, writing, speaking and understanding English.
- Training/giving and receiving instructions.
- Mathematical ability, attention to detail (e.g. organization, prioritization, proofing), concentration and alertness.
- Demonstrated work knowledge of surgical instrumentation, infection control, sterilization and decontamination equipment and techniques.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in adaptability, change management, decision making, customer service, interpersonal relations, oral communication, problem solving, system thinking, teamwork, initiative, detail-orientation, and written communication.
- Three (3) months labor and delivery experience.
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST).
- Post high school or training coursework.
