Performs a variety of duties to support the receipt, processing, testing, delivery and distribution of lab results. May perform a variety of laboratory procedures, including phlebotomy, capillary puncture and other specimen collection processes.
Essential Responsibilities:
- This position, knows and complies with all Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies and procedures. Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice in every interaction with patients, colleagues, providers, and leadership. Ensures patient safety in the preparation and provisioning of care related to but not limited to medications, procedures, infection prevention, fall prevention, including consistent use of two patient identifiers and procedural time outs. Reports safety hazards, accidents and incidents, and unsafe working conditions promptly.
- Demonstrates knowledge of specimen collection processes.
- Proficient with computer systems and multiple software programs as required, according to company and departmental procedures.
- Follows established procedures for patient identification, specimen collection and labeling.
- Maintains and completes all required documentation.
- Receives and processes all incoming specimens.
- Assesses specimen integrity and prepares, packages and arranges for transport of specimens as required. Processes specimens to include racking, creating worklists and loading instruments.
- Performs maintenance on equipment and is responsible for equipment startup and shutdown.
- Answers and assists with routine telephone inquiries in a courteous and professional manner.
- Successfully completes the required laboratory orientation, training, competencies and on-going education as assigned.
- Performs waived and moderate complexity testing according to established laboratory procedures.
- Entry of test results into the LIS for waived and moderate complexity testing.
- Communicates and documents results, including alert values to clinical staff.

- Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program and successful completion of a phlebotomy externship of at least 80 hours within a four week period within the last year or completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program and two (2) years of previous concentrated phlebotomy experience or completion of a Medical Assistant program that includes phlebotomy training and a minimum of six (6) months of concentrated phlebotomy experience within the past three (3) years.
- High school graduation or General Education Development (GED) equivalent.
- Registered Phlebotomy Technician (AMT) within 12 months of hire OR Phlebotomy Technician Certificate within 12 months of hire from American Society for Clinical Pathologists OR Certified Phlebotomy Technician (ASPT) within 12 months of hire
